Sorry, Amazon could give a free kitten with every order and it still won't unblock how inhumane they treat their warehouse workers.

I recently ordered a mattress from Amazon, and the shipping was going to be $112. I paid for Amazon Prime, saved a little bit instantly, and have free shipping for a year. Plus I can add up to four people onto my Prime list, and they get free shipping too.

It's a winner in my opinion.

I did this with a Costco subscription. Their price on the safe was so low I saved about $100 by paying for a membership. It wasn't even a gun safe, although it is an awesome safe: QE5541 Fire Safe. It has a USB pass-through so you can put a USB hard drive inside and read/write to it from outside the safe. It sits in my office next to the computer, and I use the protected drive as my backup location.

The worst part is the shock collars that prevent the workers from leaving the warehouse and getting a job somewhere else.

Sensing someone who's never had to work at a crappy job before because they need a paycheck. Besides the point that saying if you don't like it leave doesn't treat the problem of Amazon locking their warehouse employees in a heat box while violating labor laws on top of it. But hey, free shipping!

Breaking labor laws? Why hasn't anyone called the labor po-po?

And yes, I have worked crappy jobs but I have never left myself in a position where I wasn't in a position to leave an abusive job.

yup. added my sister to my account when it became available, she loves it. it's a great idea too, keeps me subscribed as i feel like i'm getting my money's worth and gets additional business from my sister.

Does your sister live with you? I swear....I looked into this when I wanted to add my dad to my prime account, but all the information I read said he had to share my address.

My good on Amazon story: I have no idea where the warehouse is that services Georgia, but over the past few months there have been several things I've gotten in a day instead of two. A freaking day. The one time I had an issue with an order, their customer service chat fixed it. When I emailed them asking about a problem with the instant video, not only did I get an email right away, but they followed up weeks later to make sure everything was still cool.

I live in the city and walk to do my errands like grocery shopping. I'm currently living alone so carrying a week's worth of food home isn't a big deal with a backpack.

However, I also live with a dog and a cat. And there's no way I'd be able to manage carting home a 40 lb box of cat litter, a 30 lb bag of cat food and a 40 lb bag of dog food all on my own.

So Amazon Prime to the rescue. Buy almost all of my nonperishable items that way these days. Running down to the doorman and taking the elevator up is so much better than panting and groaning a half mile down the road with arms full of cleaning supplies.

They used to do super saver shipping on the food my two dogs eat. I was ordering a big bag a month, since I was willing to plan a week in advance to not have to drive 20 min each way just to get to a pet store. Then they figured out that wasn't a money maker.

\I did feel bad for my FedEx lady, but she was always still her chipper self.

You can't ACTUALLY put 48 guns in there.

"X gun capacity" means there's slots for X number of guns. Unless they're all fairly compact rifles (no scopes, no pistol grips, etc.), you aren't putting that many in there. Not going to fit. For example, an AR-15 will probably take up at least a couple of those spaces, maybe more.

As for "need," well, I don't sit in judgment over what you own. We don't NEED anything more than food, shelter, clothing, and occasional medical care. You can get all that in jail but I don't think most people really want that kind of life.

As for the safe in TFA, it doesn't look like as good a safe as one might think. It looks like it has an internal hinge- that limits the swing of the door while also being much more difficult to repair (which will be needed... doors are very heavy and internal hinges tend not to last long with that kind of weight. It IS cheaper, though, and that's why they're used.

I have a couple decent safes (of higher quality than that one... it has gizmos, but the money is in the gizmos and not where it really counts), and they were NOT cheap. But they'll protect what is inside. A really good burglar can still defeat them, but my neighbors are likely to hear all the hammering that it's going to take.

My good on Amazon story: last week I bought a pair of those stupidly expensive noise-cancelling headphones made by Bose. (I probably use my headphones 45-55 hours a week, so I don't mind splurging as long as they'll last for a year or more.) I got 'em home and plugged them in and ... ugh. The noise-cancelling effect made me feel like my ears needed to pop constantly. It gave me a headache. Of course, with the package already opened I figured I was SOL, so I called Bose (they're generally pretty good with customer service) and tried to initiate an exchange, but they gave me the runaround, asked for vendor order number, etc.

So I got on Amazon customer service chat and explained the problem, that I needed the order number and instead the rep offered a refund. I blinked, then explained I'd opened the box, and he said no problem. The 350 bucks was back in my account before the return had even arrived back at their warehouse.

If you think this sounds like a money-losing proposition, you're right. Cannon, the safe company, says that it charges $700 to ship its massive flagship safe, and considering all of the other heavy items in Amazon's inventory that qualify for "Super Saver" shipping, the costs add up for the online retailer. Amazon reported a $636 million loss on shipping costs alone last quarter, which boils down to a 1 percent loss per item. It's also no cake walk for the Amazon workers who have actually have to box this stuff up in the warehouse.

I wonder how much of that is an accounting game to minimize how much they have to pay in taxes.

I'd also love to know what percentage of Prime subscribers order so little that they (the consumer) loses money on Prime.

I bought a 400 pounder. Not at Amazon though. The store loaded it in the back of my truck with a forklift, and me and a buddy used an appliance cart to move it into my basement. I left it on the pallet so that the bottom of the safe would be off the concrete. I'm told that the humidity will make it damp between the bottom of the safe and the floor and rust it out if it is in direct contact.

When I ordered my large screen TV through Amazon the shipping company they contracted with called me to setup a delivery time. Without asking they carried the TV to the second floor of my house, and even offered to help me remove it from the box.

They had barely made the UPS weight restrictions and I assumed they had been stored improperly somewhere along the line (should have been palletized).

So I got ready for the huge hassle of shipping those beasts back...instead, Overstock said "just keep them at your house for a week, if UPS doesn't come by to examine them for damage claims, then you can throw them away. Your replacements will be there shortly."

Amazon is starting to offer free shipping for imported items (... like foreign-made candy...) that are small and possibly considered impulse purchases, which may or may not be bad news for certain people's diets. You used to have to pay individual shipping prices on those items. No more, if you're buying a certain total amount of merchandise.

Imagine the logistics of just moving it around inside a typical wood structure house. If you try to move it with heavy-duty carts or dollies, the wheels would just crunch right through the floor boards. you'd have to lay down steel plates or roll it on pipes to distribute the load. Stairs would be a no-no. You'd have to keep it against a load-bearing wall or it would eventually warp the structure of the house. The best place for it would be the concrete floor of a walk-in basement.
