I usually play the MegaMillions twice a week, but sprang for the extra $2 today. There was a guy behind me who smelled like tar and farts & was wearing an orange construction vest that asked for $100 in tickets.

With the daydreaming I did on the walk home, I figured I got $2.06 in entertainment. Not a bad investment.

Just checked the numbers and I hit the Powerball, which means I win $4. I'm investing half in another ticket, the other half in a soda and taquito.

I come out another $2.06 ahead in entertainment, plus a soda, taquito, and diarrhea.

/You can't win if you don't play.

meyerkev: Hollie Maea: Tenatra: "Stay away from common lucky numbers like 3, 7 and 11 as well as numbers under 31 because they could be popular calendar dates like birthdays and anniversaries and would mean sharing the jackpot." - Looks like they have to eat their own words and probably a substantial amount of hate mail.

Lottery brings out the stupid in people.

Honestly, it's not bad advice if you're going to play. A 1 in 1 billion chance* of winning the whole lotto is better than a 1 in 1 billion chance of splitting the lotto a million ways with the other million people who share your birthday.

* Note: I don't know the actual number: (Number of lotto numbers) C (Number of numbers in Lotto) * (Number of Powerball numbers)

Winning something with a split would be better than winning nothing though. Irrational defense after the fact would be that they feel cheated for taking said advice. Such as ... All the numbers were under 31, that is BS I didn't even have a chance. We could have picked the numbers that we wanted and we might have won something or those were so totally the numbers I was going to pick OMG FML, etc.

For fun I randomly generated 1000 powerball tickets ($2000 worth) in excel. If actually purchased I would have won $151...

hooray for 1 in 175,223,510 odds!

More than anything else, I wanted to go into my bank with a check for $200 million and see if the teller makes me fill out my own (#$#)# deposit slip.

WxGuy1: Hollie Maea: Fun experiment: Tell someone that you played the lottery, and tell them that the numbers you chose were 11 11 11 11 11 11 and see if they scoff and say "Oh come on, what are the chances that it would be all 11s?"

Well, the odds are 0 since repeat numbers cannot be drawn in Powerball. I suspect you know this, but I figured I'd mention it in case someone gets confused.

/ I like to play "1 2 3 4 5 PB6" to get the same "ha, what are the chances?" question...

I actually didn't know that; I don't follow the lottery close enough to know the rules. But I do understand probability enough to know that any one "remarkable" number is no more or less likely than any one number with no patterns in it.

Eh, if you are doing anything past random number generation, you are over thinking it. With the jackpot so high, every goddamn news outlet is breathlessly covering it, and they are all advising people to choose this or that to decrease chances of splitting. Does that mean that more people will try to do that than will choose their birthday? Maybe. I don't know, but I do know that whenever people choose numbers they are not random and they clump, even if they think they are outsmarting it.

Ha, I love that all the numbers were under 31. All the "lottery winning tips" articles that came out this week were saying to pick numbers bigger than that otherwise you'd have to split jackpots with people who picked birthdays.

Winners in Arizona and Missouri, that sucks. Probably mouthbreathers

2012-11-29 01:34:45 AM
Haven't checked my tickets yet, but, if I won I'm not cashing in until I check with Mitt Romney on how I can get out of paying taxes and what's a good bank in the Caymen's to hide the money in.

The stupid thing about that is unless you're splitting it with several people, you're still getting more than the average jackpot. Looks like this one is a twofer which means $290 million which is a lot more than average.

Winners in Arizona and Missouri? What are the odds that at least one of them was already insane, and the odds that the insane person is from Arizona?

Today I went into the gas station and filled out seven powerball slips, choosing each consecutive powerball number on each slip and letting the machine quickpick the regular five numbers. I had the guy run it through the machine one time for a total of $70. I had a $100 bill from the ATM so I bought a $30 scratcher and actually won $500. I took $350 of it and had the guy run the slips each five more times. I then had $210 in tickets and $150 in cash from my $100 ATM withdrawal. I was basically up $50 at that point and I had a guarantee of $24 in winning tickets because I had 6 of each powerball numbers one through 35. That would total $74 assuming I win nothing else on any of the tickets. Turns out I did win nothing else because if you get one regular number and the powerball its still just $4 for some reason. I had two tickets with a single number and the powerball and 4 with just the regular powerball. I made a total of $74 but I really should have just walked out up $400 when I could have. The powerball fever got me.... oh well.

If you'd have won, you probably just would have blown it on a hundred lottery tickets a week for the next 18,000 years.

2012-11-29 02:48:28 AM

buzzcut73: I didn't even come close. Spent $4 and did the quick pick, there was no number on those tickets below 32.
Guess I'll go to class tomorrow.

/Would have gone to class anyway

Hell, mine was not below 33. What are the odds?

2012-11-29 02:50:04 AM
I got two numbers right of my lucky numbers. Just as well. I'd have to stop working if I won.

2012-11-29 02:55:09 AM
I've spent money on way dumber things than a lottery. For example, there was this guy ... and then another time there was this old car ...

Anyhoo ... I did match the Powerball, which was 6. And only the Powerball. Is it true I won $3?

2012-11-29 02:55:46 AM
Wife informed me yesterday that she bought 2 tickets for 4 dollars. She just let me know that we won 4 dollars.

This is how they keep you hooked, man. But really, I wouldn't be surprised if we we're both too lazy to cash it out. We're generally too lazy to buy them in the first place because they don't let you buy with a freaking Debit Card.

2012-11-29 02:57:13 AM
I like the lottery you get at times when buying a beer, in that game im always a winner if the beer is ok to drink.

I bought one QP. They took my 2.00.

I walked into the gas station to get milk realized the jackpot was high and did the same thing I do every time the jackpot is high. I fill out a slip choosing random numbers, buy myself some ice cream (went with a drumstick this time) then go home. I have now happily eaten a drumstick in victory of not wasting $2 on a powerball ticket. Conviniently if my numbers were drawn I had ice cream to console me.

Hah! I never play but I broke down and bought three tickets yesterday. I jokingly said something about how absurd it was to the clerk selling it that the winning numbers could very well be like 1 2 3 4..... She then replied that there's a handfull of people that play those numbers every week. So my guess if that ever did hit you'd be sharing it with a lot of people.

/in other news I think I won $4 which only puts me $2 in the hole

2012-11-29 03:39:06 AM
fun story: 3 of my numbers were 15 -16 - 22. and those were the only ones that matched. yay $7. not worth the subsequent anticlimax.

Didn't win, but that means I won't have to put up with a flood of letters from total strangers telling me fake-o sob stories asking for bucks, dumbass friends and family suddenly wanting me to finance their doomed-to-fail businesses, or worrying that the loved one I once knew may decide to kill me off so that they can make off with the inheritance.

I heard somewhere that winning the lottery doesn't make your problems go away. You just swap your old problems with a lot of new ones.

And as Chris Rock would say, you wouldn't be truly rich. Just wealthy (Michael Jordan is wealthy. The guy that signed his checks is rich!).

/I'd pity Jack Whattaker if he wasn't already a douche before he won the lottery.

I was in the workplace pool. For those of you saying the lottery is for people that are bad at math, well that may be quite true. However, how would you feel if you were the lone jackwagon who smugly declined to throw in 2 bucks and the pool won? Suicidal, that's how you'd feel. It's worth the $2 for that peace of mind alone.

2012-11-29 08:10:49 AM
I won 3 dollars.

LegacyDL: If it helps the millions of people who played and lost tonight: It could be worse, you could have won the jackpot causing you to become your own worst enemy. Imagine, friends & family clawing at you for money thus making you turn to drugs and alcohol which then leads you to having a one night stand with a woman who claimed she did porno in the 80s, then she accuses you of rape and tries to sue you. You freak out and move to Tibet and lodge up at a monastery only to find out that your lawyer/friends/family/bookie/drug dealer climbed up those 800 steps to track you down. You panic, attempt suicide via gunshot to the head and fail causing you to become brain dead. Your family then starts to argue about power of attorney while you lay in your hospital bed like a vegetable and late at night when it's all quiet the nurse pees in your mouth and farts in your face.

Don't be the guy who has a nurse pee in his mouth and fart in his face? Get DirectTV instead?

Happy Hours: Had a good time fantasizing about what I'd do with all the money though....

IMO that's the whole point of it. I don't get the people who say "don't waste your two bucks." A two-dollar fantasy is more entertainment than I usually get spending $40 going to a movie and buying snacks at the theater. Maybe I'd get that much excitement and entertainment buying movie tickets and wondering if the movie was any good, but I doubt it.

\didn't buy any this time. Waiting for the jackpot to get BIG
\\means: gas station I went to last night didn't sell tickets.
