(Science 2.0)   For those of you nerdy enough to get excited about the Higgs discovery, I've got some bad news: Italian government officially cancels construction of the much-anticipated SuperB factory   (science20.com) divider line 21

You mean you don't find it strange that they went over this project with a fine-toothed comb, up and down, from top to bottom, and decided to cancel the whole thing? I'd say that's a big W for the taxpayers.

Production of SuperB's has been set back so far that the Basilica di San Francesco had to never be built in order for SuperB production to occure on time. This makes postcards of the Basilica di San Francesco incredibly valuable and, unfortunately, blank.

I don't care about the color or flavor of the research being done, but it's high time some country, any country takes the super position of supporting basic theoretical research! I'm tired of having to gauge possible schools for my kids and find out they're just doing grade B physics. The decay of basic science research and spin of the politicians gutting programs is just really weak. What a bunch of hadrons.

Well, I guess it's just RegularB, then.

Sad, they were so close to being able to predict earthquakes too.

It's Italy, ever since they imprisoned those geologists they've lepton the train of hating science I tell you. Shipped de poor scientists off to deconfinement in de prison.

I wouldn't be surprised if they turned 3 colors looking for an excuse to do this.

/Cheers!

The Euro-poors spend all their money bailing out their crooked bankers.

Kind of like we're doing here in America.

First thing I thought of when reading the headline.

Wow, particle physics puns.... now I've seen it all!

With SuperB it's a guarantee*

*offer void in Italy.

They should have told the people responsible for the funding that their study would eventually* lead to more accurate earthquake prediction.

*For some undefined, but significantly large definition of eventually.

With this move the Italian government shows again how little they care for basic research in Italy

Does the writer of this article pay any attention to Italy's current financial position?

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: With this move the Italian government shows again how little they care for basic research in Italy

Of course not. Scientists are no different from anyone else. They want to cut someone else's programs or raise taxes on someone else to pay for the things they want. The only difference is that they don't want better weapons, healthier people, or more jobs - they want to try to discern more of the nature of the universe.

Look we already got Africanized killer bees. We don't need Italian super bees on top of that.

But should we blame the media for baryon the headline?

The same people weeping when these projects get killed will vote for politicians that want to borrow increasing amounts of money to prop up bankrupt welfare states.

Thanks to our politicians in both parties, the U.S. is no better off, drastic cuts in funding for scientific research are inevitable.
