My problem is the shoulders and neck. His neck should be hidden under the fat, not just added on top of it. He's like a fat giraffe. And the shoulders, again, are standard muscular ones just added onto the outside of a fat torso... like the cantilevered eyes on a hammerhead shark.

I have this problem. I found a local tailor that will trim baggy XL shirts down to slim fit for 15-20 dollars.

Also, check out H&M if you happen to have a store nearby. Found lots of great long-but-slim-fit shirts there for under $29.

Don't men's shirts come in regular and fitted options in the US? Collar size first, then decide if fitted (skinny body) or regular (husband shaped) is required. Or is that not the kind of shirt you're talking about?

They typically only go by collar size and arm length. It really does suck.

Nothing wrong with plus-sized mannequins, but there should be some effort to make them look, well, human.

While a pure "calories in, calories out" metric sounds reasonable and is easy to understand, it doesn't actually work in real life. Some other factors involved include genetics (as illustrated by Eps05's coworker), chronic illness (my older brother is on an anti-Schizophrenia medication that made him blow up like a balloon), and a few less obvious things like insomnia and gut flora.

Sorry, but no. I do not believe in "fat genes" (and I'm not a skinny guy being a dick, I am noticeably overweight myself).

Lack of self control genes, sure. Lazy genes, maybe. Choosing the wrong things to eat genes, it's possible. But fat genes, no.

Unless you believe in the ability to create energy out of nowhere, it is simply not possible. You burn a finite amount of energy just existing. You have to take in more than that amount of energy to gain weight and become fat. You control that amount of energy with your lifestyle choices.

Change your lifestyle choices to help you burn more calories, and eat less to help you take in more calories, and you will make a difference. Continue to do so for the rest of your life, and you will never be fat again.

Do a crash diet and then immediately go back to your old caloric intake and poor lifestyle choices, and you *will* gain the weight back, but that's not your genes, that is your lack of self control and discipline.

Maybe if you like starving all day long every day. I don't remember exactly though. I think it had something to do with the body being incapable of converting fat to energy due to a defect. Like diabetes being linked to defects toward converting sugars to energy.

Do you believe in perpetual motion machines? No? Well, a human body that gains weight without intaking more calories than it is expending is, in effect, the same thing.

We don't get energy out of the air (well, without having a caloric intake for all that lovely oxygen to go to town on). We don't get energy via radio waves. We don't get it by wishing and hoping, and we don't get it from Santa.

We get energy precisely one way, unless we're in hospital on an IV drip.

We get it through our mouths.

Put the correct amount in your mouth and it is not physically possible to gain weight.

Also I get farking paranoid when I'm with my fiancee in one of the sections at the Macy's here. They have a large room off to the side for all the young women's clothing and the mannequins in there have natural poses. Out of the corner of my eye I feel like they are real farking people staring at me and every 20 ft or so there is another group of 2 of 3.

Let me clue you in on why people are fat. The average daily calories for the average american is up from 2200 in the 70s to 2700 now. Now thats just the average, but think of what 500 calories will do to a waist line in a year (extra 500 that is).

The "epidemic" makes it sound like a disease, its not, its simply people eating too damn much. Period.

I saw a show like that. Forget what it was called, BBC or ITV. Lass worked in a fast food joint, insisted she didn't eat the food at all, coworkers agreed. Her whole family was badly overweight, too, and nobody could explain it. They were eating under 2,000 calories a day. It was a total mystery.

It was a total mystery, that is, until the hidden TV cameras went up at work and home, and they had people going through the trash to examine what everybody was eating. Turned out the whole family was overeating badly, I believe somewhere around double their necessary daily intake. And little miss fast food was about the worst of the lot, shoveling fast food into her face in a store room at work like there was no tomorrow on a daily basis.

And that's when she *knew* she was being watched and filmed for the show. I shudder to think what a normal day was like.

The simplest explanation is usually right. Who knows, maybe your friend really isn't overeating at work, but if they're gaining weight, they're overeating (and probably underexercising) somewhere.

You have to eat right, and you have to exercise.

90% of people who are fat would not be fat if they ate right and exercised an hour a day instead of watching TV.

I've always been a small, skinny kind of guy. My whole family is. I took it for granted for about 10 years and was almost completely sedentary.

A few months ago I wrenched my shoulder taking off my hoodie while in my car. I was debilitated and in pain for 2 full weeks.

That was a wakeup call. I changed my diet significantly, and I've begun exercising an hour a day or so.

I haven't lost any weight, but my stomach looks better, so does my chest, and most importantly, I'm no longer in constant pain from pulling muscles doing simple things like taking off an article of clothing.

/It's simply not rocket science for most people.

Usually it's tied to thyroid issues- however anything in the metabolic path can screw up and cause issues- My hypothesis is some bodies are geared to "store ALL THE FOOD" whereas some use it all.

But yes, it can happen. Note: if the fat is distributed on the gut heaviest of all, that can be a thyroid indicator. All over? Laziness/overeating, etc.
