I was thinking exactly that. The fact that this planet apparently has a need for an Acid Survivors Foundation makes me want to gather up the decent folks so we can cut out losses and leave, and salt the earth as we flee.

Proposing an horrific solution to an horrific act doesn't really advance us as a people. On the other hand only handing out one year sentences for the horrific act doesn't really advance us much as a people either.

I didn't bother to watch the 10 minute video that goes with this, although I have no doubt it would help.

My first reaction to this was frustration - how was she persuaded exactly? There must be a lot more to this. I expect it comes down to lack of other support services that she would be able to access if she lived in other countries.

It might be pointless expecting there to be any such things in Bangladesh, though. How in hell's name it would be possible to make all the social changes needed for her to be able to be really independent of her husband's family (and blind as well) I have no idea.

It doesn't seem right that signing some affadavit got him off the hook. That's the only thing I can think of that the government of Bangladesh could see to right away that would generally change things for the better - take a hard line on this sort of behaviour. But then again I've seen someone do less than a year for cutting his girlfriend's throat in this country (UK).

Oh fark it. The whole world in general is just so messed up. I despair.

I feel so sorry for women in third world countries that are beaten, and treated worse then cattle. God forbid they should get raped, it's their fault. Could you imagine someone beating your wife because they thought she was being immoral?

If appropriate and certain retaliation resulted every time one of these acts was perpetrated, don't you think that most people would conclude the crime wasn't worth the cost to themselves? I'd count it as advancing ourselves as a people if it cut down on the number of women burned in the face with acid or subjected to an honor killing.

This happened in a country where the justice system is very much based on an eye for an eye. Doesn't seem to be doing much good. I think a better standard of living and education would go a lot farther.

Someone also made a sarcastic remark about sharia law coming to the USA soon and to expect this sort of thing to be happening - actually I remember a year or two ago there was a case in the middle east where this happened, and the sharia law punishment was that the guy had his eyes put out for it. I don't think these acid attacks have got anything to do with sharia law - although the attitudes that lead to them seem to be more commonly associated with muslims. Not exclusively so, though.
