Someone recently showed me a video of Beck getting VERY VERY SERIOUS because some news organization or another had secret info on Benghazi that they refused to release. Beck threaten that he would out them if they didn't do their journalistic duty and publish the information they had.

Did he ever follow up on that? He sure made it sound like a big deal!

It just goes to show how hard art is. Serrano's work, while disgusting, is at least strangely engaging. This just looks like something they'd sell at a rest stop.

Like everything Beck does, it's derivative and unoriginal. All he is is a patent medicine salesman, selling regurgitated GOP talking points to desperate rubes looking for reinforcement of their hate filled fantasies.

Has there been a cultural event in American history that has obsessed the right-wing more than "Piss Christ?"

I can't even pay attention to the Piss Christ Obama, because I'm too distracted by the flow chart of crazy on that blackboard. It brings me back to college, when I had a kid in my dorm hall who was beginning to suffer from the effects of schizophrenia and he drew on his dorm room wall exactly like that. Eventually his parents had to come pick him up and institutionalize him.

Glenn Beck used to have various non-political radio shows where he was a shock jock who did things including mocking his co-hosts wife's miscarriage on air to get ratings.

Heck, when I was in college, at my conservative Christian school, they had an art historian come lecture in chapel about depictions of Christ in art over the years and showing slides of "Piss Christ" in frikking chapel prompted zero controversy. That the right wing keeps freaking out is ridiculous.

I believe the outrage it caused was part of the intent and the point. One could argue that in the realm of art with all its "madonnas" and whatnot it was a fairly fresh and edgy statement, however simplistic. Not really a brilliant masterpiece, but still a statement by an artist in a unique way.

A nutjob pundit making yet another crass attack on a political figure by dipping a farking bobblehead in fake piss is not anywhere near the same thing, which is something Beck and the sheepfarking teabillies will never understand or care about.

The idea, for Beck however, is not to be untoward, but through irony, to highlight the hypocrisy of those who would shout in defiance at defacing the image of a sitting U.S. president, but not that of an image so sacred to Christianity - the world's largest religion.

Glen Beck is in a frantic dash to the bottom of the crazy barrel. Just when we all think he'shiat rock-crazy-bottom, he redefines crazy in a whole new way. You could say he is the foremost innovator in the insane lunatic arts.

I seriously pity people who watch his crazy rants.

2012-11-28 12:17:45 PM
I'm still convinced that Glenn Beck is simply trolling. He used to routinely troll his listeners back when he was the afternoon drive time guy in Tampa, and when he wasn't trolling he'd always be a sane and reasonable conservative. This is the kind of stuff he'd do to troll too.

Okay, seriously, wtf is going on with that blackboard behind him? How does that not just scream crazy to anyone who happens to look at it? Seriously, I had a friend who went to art school; dipping bobbleheads in urine doesn't even move the needle but that blackboard is creepy.

Look at it again, in all its glory. There is a man, in an apron, dipping a bobblehead of Obama into a jar of urine. The background is a chalkboard of crazy.

This one image has captured the entire essence of Glenn Beck, and the soul of the GOP.

This photo should win a Pulitzer. I'm half serious too, only because it looks like a screen-cap of video and doesn't have the candid feel needed for a Pulitzer. Now if someone off camera took a photo showing the whole staged production, I think I would pay money for that.

Can some fark artist draw up a picture of Glenn and Mitt stripped down to their magic Mormon underwear while dancing on a stripper pole? In the audience, have a crowd of southern white christian rednecks making it rain with money earmarked for the church? In the Champagne room, have Rush, Pat Robinson and Murdoch peeking out with massive hardons. Sarah Palin and and Ann Culter can be seen sitting in a corner sulking and showing great disdain and jealousy of the two center stag dancers.

This is just theater for his moronic audience who assume that liberals will be SOOOOOOOOOOO offended by this... primarily because they would. The whole is classic conservative projection.

"Liberals revere and worship Obama on an almost messianic level and consider him sacred! (they must, because that's how we view our leaders)"

"Oh boy... You go, Glenn! This will really get those liberals' panties in a twist...They're going to be livid at seeing the graven image of their dear leader so brazenly disrespected!!! (because that's how we'd feel if it were Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush or, if he'd been elected, Mitt Romney)"

I don't think anyone would find it controversial if you put a bobblehead in piss. Typical example where conservatives don't understand context.

Well, I actually found it fairly childishly disrespectful, since his intended meaning was clear, but then again I also found the Piss Christ childishly disrespectful. Beck gets a slightly higher score for 'childish' thanks to the bobblehead, but they're both idiots.

I found it childishly disrespectful because, whether or not it was symbolic, it was a highly important symbol to a major religion. Unless you have mental problems, it's practically impossible to not realize exactly how that's going to be taken, and therefore it's pretty likely that the intended message had nothing to do with the plastic of the cross.

Maybe it shouldn't be, but that's a different discussion.

Unless you have mental problems, it's practically impossible to not realize exactly how that's going to be taken, and therefore it's pretty likely that the intended message had nothing to do with the plastic of the cross.

Easily offended Bible thumpers don't tend to show much interest in modern art photography, so it's unlikely they were the intended audience. Artist have produced controversial portrayals of Christ both before and after Seranno without causing worldwide condemnation and still inspiring anger a quarter of a century later. It was practically impossible to realize it would be taken like that.

It brings me back to college, when I had a kid in my dorm hall who was beginning to suffer from the effects of schizophrenia and he drew on his dorm room wall exactly like that. Eventually his parents had to come pick him up and institutionalize him.

No kidding. I so want a hi-res version of that black board, so i can figure out where the reverse-vampires come into play.
We're through the looking piss glass here, people.
The man is clearly insane and I don't see his parents coming to institutionalize him.

I think the best part about this whole fiasco is the fact that Glenn Beck put it up for auction on EBay for charity. The entire premise of the Obama in Pee Pee is, as was said, to "point out the hypocrisy" of liberals, who he assumes were going to cry like babies because "Dear Leader" was placed in a jar of piss, much like how Christians reacted to Piss Christ (and those durn durty libbies told them to get over it.)

Cue thirty minutes later-- EBay removed the object from sales because the EBay policy states body fluids cannot be sold.

Guess what? Glenn Beck and his ilk are now throwing a screaming shiatfest because they're offended that it was taken down. No, really, they are horrified that EBay wouldn't make an exception in their policy to get back at Fartbongo. Now, they're crying like babies because EBay didn't treat them like special children.

If this isn't the most deliciously ironic backfiring, I'm not sure what is.

It was a cheap, poorly made plastic crucifix, so I've always seen it as a comment on the crass commercialization and cheapening of Jesus' message of universal love. But I could be wrong.
To whom did you find it disrespectful?

/Artistic expression usually involves actual thought processes.

So does interpretation.

People are dicks sometimes. Just because you slap the art label on it doesn't mean the artist wasn't being a dick too.

His point was to make you think about how televangeIists treat Christianity. I love how people can read books about all kinds of things and not think the writers mean it all literally, or see films and realize they are watching a story...but put an artist's image or a sculpture--one that is not flowers or puppies or "nice"--out there and the ignorant, unreflective knee-jerk reactions start flying immediately. OMG! Serrano hates Jesus and wants to drown him in piss! That artist is horrible for believing this!

Oh, trust me, people are just the same about books and movies. But like I said, if the times were the same, I highly doubt that was the point.

PsiChick: Well, I actually found it fairly childishly disrespectful, since his intended meaning was clear, but then again I also found the Piss Christ childishly disrespectful. Beck gets a slightly higher score for 'childish' thanks to the bobblehead, but they're both idiots.

In defense of Piss Christ, Serrano created his work as a protest of the Catholic Church's positions on homosexuality at the height of the AIDS crises. It helps to know that Serrano is Spanish (a heavily Catholic country, where the church had strong ties with the then fascist government) and gay.

Serrano's work operates on many levels. If you don't know the story behind it, it's is a really beautiful image -- this ethereal crucifx suspended in a hazy glow of gold and crimson. That's where Beck's hack job really falls down. There is no challenge to Beck's work, because the resulting product is not beautiful.

If you know how he (Serrano) achieved the effect -- shooting through a mix of blood, urine and water -- then it presents a far deeper challenge. It challenges the viewer to ask which does more harm to the image of Christ in the popular conception, to suspend a crucifix is bodily fluids, or to use Christ as a cover for the politics of homophobia (which, at the time, were directly contributing to the spread of the AIDS epidemic, re: Silence = Death, etc.).

It's funny, but Serrano's Piss Christ -- which became a media sensation in 1989, when I was 13 -- is what got me interested in the fine arts in the first place, and was the first time I became aware of art as more than mere decoration. So thanks Jesse Helms!

It's certainly a noble goal, but I work in literature, and a huge part of having formatting rules here is that it spurs creativity. Writing a sonnet or haiku provides a pressure that free-form doesn't. So as much as I applaud the goals, I just think using urine was maybe the wrong metaphor there. Blood and water, for example, would have had very different nuances than adding urine; urine sort of cheapens it, and I think it was very much a bad idea to break that rule specifically.

A lot of art is breaking rules, but how you do it can turn into whether or not it's good.

/Generally, pissing on something sends a very different message than I think Serrano should have conveyed.

Well, I'll admit I'm pretty biased -- I absolutely love aggressively challenging art. I mean, Marco Evaristti's "Helena" is my favorite installation piece ever, so that gives you an idea of where I'm coming from.

I think with Serrano's work you really have to make the effort to see the work without thinking about how the art was made. Because the work itself is beautiful, and features all of the hallmarks of romanticism -- soft light, glowing colors, mystical imagery. But as soon as you start thinking about the elements he uses -- blood, urine, semen, breast milk -- you're no longer dealing with the image qua the image, but rather your own subjective feelings about those elements. And that's the challenge of Serrano's work, it forces you to ask if you can separate the image from the process of creating the image, which in turn raises hard questions about bias and subjectivity.

By combining bodily fluids with religious iconography, Serrano pushes these questions even further, as the subjective feelings we have about those elements tend to be very different from the feelings we have about piss, blood and semen. It's easy to dismiss Serrano's work as childish and disrespectful, but I would suggest that it is the visceral reaction to the elements of its creation that is childish. After all, to appreciate Serrano's work for its inherent beauty, one has to be able to detach oneself from the immature "eew gross!" reaction to the elements of creation.

The question of whether it is disrespectful is far more contentious. Is it disrespectful to challenge institutions of authority? Serrano used bodily fluids to produce beautiful and haunting images of religious iconography. Is that disrespect? If God is everywhere, then isn't God necessarily in blood, piss and semen? If that is the case, then how can suspending a crucifix in urine -- where God already exists! - be disrespectful?

There are no right answers to these questions, but the questions are there in the art. That's how we know it's art, because it challenges us in ways that Dogs Playing Poker never will.

I have to agree. The few times I've seen him drop the act and say something serious, he's been surprisingly well-informed and well-spoken. Either he lost his damn mind somewhere, or he's well aware he's going off the deep and and just decided to see just how far he can push it.

Is it just me, or did it seem pretty obvious that Jamie Foxx was trolling conservatives when he said that? I was pretty sure I saw a smirk on his face as he was saying that.

And as usual, some clueless conservatives took the bait. Especially a raging Republitroll on another forum I regularly post on.Here's a brief rundown of how the whole thing went down:

Republitroll: "I could see this coming and expect it will get even more radical. Jamie Foxx calls Obama God, Lord and Savior. The crazy love affair continues. What's next?"

Forum member: "Only four more years of being scared by a black president, [Republitroll]. And didn't you know? Jamie Foxx is Obama's John the Baptist.

Republitroll: "No one ever called Reagan their God, Savior and Lord -- it's new territory.Ya'll can say now that you're not atheists in the religion of Obama."

Me: "You got us there, [Republitroll]. I pray in the direction of the White House at least 5 times a day, and plan to make a pilgrimage to Obama's true birth place in Kenya next year. I wish to meet him someday and kiss his feet in hopes that he will heal my legs so that I can walk again.

Unfortunately, no matter how many times I pray to him for you, he can't heal your everlasting butthurt. Some things are beyond even his power."

Precisely. I happen to find it strikingly beautiful in a strange sort of way, and that despite the fact that I'm from a Christian tradition that doesn't believe in any images of Christ. I think it's powerful precisely because it's this cheap plastic crucifix in urine that at the same time produces such a hauntingly beautiful image. That juxtaposition speaks to me at a visceral level, and despite the fact that I don't particularly believe in producing images of Christ and am supposedly supposed to be offended by the idea of a crucifix in urine, I'm drawn to the work.

lennavan: Glenn Beck used to have various non-political radio shows where he was a shock jock who did things including mocking his co-hosts wife's miscarriage on air to get ratings.

So I for one am shocked this guy ended up dunking a bobblehead of the POTUS in pee for attention.

Not just mocking the rival host's wife's miscarriage on air, he actually called her up to mock her about her miscarriage on air.

"The animosity between Beck and Kelly continued to deepen. When Beck and Hattrick produced a local version of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" for Halloween - a recurring motif in Beck's life and career - Kelly told a local reporter that the bit was a stupid rip-off of a syndicated gag. The slight outraged Beck, who got his revenge with what may rank as one of the cruelest bits in the history of morning radio. "A couple days after Kelly's wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, 'We hear you had a miscarriage,' " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce [Kelly] apparently can't do anything right - about he can't even have a baby.""

I'd suggest tossing Beck to the crocodiles, but that would be cruel and unusual nourishment.

I tried to vote but they didn't have a "Beck is inconsequential as are his followers" selection.

cc_rider: Gato Blanco: I think the best part about this whole fiasco is the fact that Glenn Beck put it up for auction on EBay for charity.

Well, this just went from "Meh" to farking hilarious in short time. Never thought I'd see conservatives whine because they can't bid for urine on ebay. Link

Clearly, the real victims here are those who understand neither actual art nor actual outrage. Urine idiot, Mr. Beck.

Well the bidding was up to at least $7200 before ebay took it down. Too bad, I was curious to see how much conservatives would pay for a mason jar full of piss.

2012-11-29 07:20:51 AM
They pay money to huge bags of piss and shiat, and then go vote for them. So this is a bargain.

Don't worry. Glenn's mom killed herself, one of his kids came out overcooked, and now, he's going blind.
I think the Karmic debt is now paid.

Precisely. I happen to find it strikingly beautiful in a strange sort of way, and that despite the fact that I'm from a Christian tradition that doesn't believe in any images of Christ.

Just out of curiosity and general interest: Which tradition is that?

Also, thanks, everybody, for a surprisingly pleasant, interesting and informative thread. A civilized discussion about art interpretation and bodily fluids is not what I expected to find on the Pol tab last night.

One of his daughters has cerebral palsy but she's at least 23 and grew up with her mother and not Beck.

I'm running a copy of that Bech chalkboard pic through a little bit of image processing here.

I'll post the thing when I get done.

What? Where'd I say anything about Beck?

Oh, I see. I could only disrespect the Prophet Obama (PBUH) if I am a slave of Beck. I couldn't simply decide to do that on my own, based on my own opinion and/or from seeing how (much worse) folks like you behaved here during the Bush years.

Not sure what you were intending to say with that word salad. And I said "the left", not democrats.

It kind of sounds like the leftist equivalent of this:

Funny how only Republicans call Obama Prophet, Messiah, Anointed One, etc., and then project that onto Democrats. Didn't your God tell you not to worship anyone but him?

Sorry you weren't intelligent enough to understand it, troll. If you need it condensed into a 4th-grade format, I feel pity for you.
