Stunod/stunad is an Italian-American thing.

I thought it was "stunad", which in turn is some mezzogiorno dialectical derivation of the adjective "stonatto".

Did the city revert to a 1970's stereotyped version of itself on Monday?

You know you have a problem when lack of violent crimes is actually newsworthy.

Well, except without the murder.

For the US, at least, New York is actually one of the safest cities in terms of incidents per capita. And with 8 million people you figure something's going to happen somewhere. Also, hasn't crime been a feature of cities since the beginning of human history?

There is. It's not all of it, more/more effective policing has at least as much effect, along with low unemployment and other avenues of legal opportunity.

Basically, you need bad people to think they'll get caught and punished to prevent them from doing bad things. You can punish the living crap out of the ones you catch, but if the chance of getting caught is low, punishment alone won't affect behavior that much.

John Redcorn: "stunod"? Is that a real thing?

Stunod/stunad is an Italian-American thing.

It is. In various contexts it can mean confused, clumsy, drunk, really tired - basically not in complete control of one's faculties for one reason or another.

Not to be confused with 'stugots'.

This. Sad an indictment of humanity though it may be, a three-zero day is actually pretty remarkable in any sufficiently large city, and has been for centuries. New York is nothing if not sufficiently large.

I did in fact confuse it with "stugots", which I learned from the works of Martin Scorcese.

In the cooler parts of the northeast, Dunkin' Donuts has been known as Niknud Stunod since around 1980, as a matter of fact.

Arkanaut: e. Also, hasn't crime been a feature of cities since the beginning of human history?

Actually, we made cities before we defined crime. The earliest recorded laws were from Hammurabi who was the 6th king of Babylon, so there where at least 5 kings without laws (and therefore crime), plus all the cities before babylon.

But then one could argue that a good code of basic civility is fundamental for a city to exist....even if it wasn't written down. Structure doesn't really exist in chaos.

An immigrant from the Caribbean came to New York to do the job American killers didn't want to.

Since crime is, by definition, the breaking of a law, yeah, crime definitely did not exist until we codified it.

"Schmuck" doesn't mean stupid. It means asshole. Schmuck is Yiddish slang for penis, and it's a synonym for dick in every way. Same thing for putz.

What you want to use for doofus is schlemiel, schmo, yutz, etc.

/Schlemiel is the guy who spills the soup. Schlemazzle is the guy he spills it on.

Point taken. Probably should have said "stupid or annoying people". Or something.

by that definition, people are criminals at the point of breaking a law, rather than point of conviction
