The wikipedia page is pretty funny.

I especially like the occupation of "Idiot Referee".

I watched that whole game last night, and as a Lakers fan I'm not going to put that game on the refs. But boy was Joey Crawford was in rare form last night. One of the more laughable things (besides this ridiculousness) was when he called a tech on Kobe, who was behind him on the play, as the Pacers were in the midst of a 4 on 1 fast break. It was clearly one of those "the fans are here to see me" calls. I'm not saying Kobe didn't deserve getting the T because he had been biatching about calls the whole game and was basically trying to go one on five on many possessions, leading to his ten turnovers. But Crawford literally saw the fast break and stopped it anyway to make that call, which was embarrassing.

Also it was a terrible game to watch, no one could hit any open shots. The Pacers had plenty of opportunities to put the Lakers away down the stretch with wide open shots they couldn't hit, and the Lakers had plenty of chances to go ahead on the free throw line, but gagged. Dwight Howard and MWP missed 4 straight free throws back to back when they were down by one with under a minute to go. Dwight is just an embarrassment from the free throw line, and should be benched down the stretch. The thought of him being the guy to lead the Lakers into their next era is laughable. Pau Gasol doesn't even look like he wants to be there - he's not aggressive at all and didn't even want to shoot the ball in the 4th quarter. I've defended that guy for years but he's really starting to piss me off.

I'm not too worried though because it looks like Steve Nash will be back sooner than later. It was a near miracle the Lakers were in that game at the end, considering their point guard position went a combined 0-9 from the field, 0-6 from three, and 2-8 from the line. And before these last few games I've been saying no way for Pau Gasol for Josh Smith, but now I'm thinking that would be a great deal if they can get him and Kyle Korver (the salaries would match on that). Korver can hit the open three unlike anyone else that's currently playing on this roster, and at least Josh Smith can get up and down the court and won't be afraid to take open shots and play aggressively on both sides of the floor.

Start at 2:13 for Joey Crawford buying fans beers

He's one of Stern's favorite fixers. From Wikipedia:

In 1998, Crawford was one of eight NBA referees charged with filing false income tax returns after an Internal Revenue Service investigation found that cash was being pocketed by referees when airline tickets provided by the league were downgraded. At the conclusion of a four year investigation, Crawford pleaded guilty on July 1, 1998[4] to falsely stating income of $82,500 from 1991 to 1993[5] and resigned from the NBA effective immediately. He was reinstated by NBA commissioner David Stern in 1999 and did not miss a game due to the players' lockout that started the 1998-99 NBA season.[6]

And open threes. But that's why I said I wasn't worried because Nash should be back soon and he'll take care of a lot of that. He has to stay healthy though, because that bench is even worse than I thought it'd be going into the season.

Just want to make sure I understand this...

Lakers, the team that gets more bogus calls in its favor than any other team in the NBA ever ('cept maybe the Jordan Bulls) complaining about the calls in a game?

wait..

That one's my favorite. I mean I get it, he's the teams superstar and there are a billion Knicks fans and some people just have to jersey-up, but are you really that excited to buy a Carmelo jersey? "Man, no one in the league can ball-stop and shoot right-wing jumpers like my man 'Melo!"

From TFA "Worst thing about the NBA". Agreed.

Stern should make Crawford watch the NFL refs - they make an effort to remain emotionally removed from the game so that they can get the call (or no call) right. They still make mistakes, but they don't look like ridiculous attention whores while doing it.

Crawford is still a horrible ref. The NBA is chock full of them though, so it's not like it's a surprise or anything.

/Palmer and Bavetta, I'm looking at you

That's embarrassing. No professional referee should ever look like that.

Joey Crawford's from my town and he once ref'd an All-star game that I was a part of. Can't remember if he gave out any technicals though.

Pacers: FTM-A = 17-27

Lakers: FTM-A = 23-43

The officials tried to give it to the Lakers like they always do but even with all the help they couldn't over come their own ineptitude.

Stern loves Crawford though. There's a reason why he has kept him around so long.

That's probably not even the worst call last night.

This crew called a charge and a blocking foul on the same farking play.

Aren't double fouls allowed in case of differing official opinion?

I've seen double technicals, never double personals. It's impossible for that play to be anything other than an either/or situation.

Hell, call nothing and allow for a jump ball if you can't agree on a decision.

I've seen double fouls on loose balls before, but that looked like a pretty clear change imo. One of the refs was just wrong.

This is the 2nd time this month I've consulted a professional sport's rulebook for an obscure rule.

Apparently, a double foul can be awarded in the case of differing official opinion. However, no shots may be awarded and the ball is placed for a jump ball in the center of the court. Rule 12, Section 6 - F.

It doesn't specifically mention calls that are "either-or" decisions, but I assume that if two referees differ and neither are willing to overrule then that's the right call.
