t3knomanser: I've been reading about theanene supplements, which is the part of green tea that's supposed to be the smart-making bit. Reddit loves it, but that doesn't really mean much.

Even IF there was something to it, it's analogous to a protein shake. If you don't utilize it right away, the body's going to either use it elsewhere or just get rid of it. It's called a "supplement" for a reason; it's supposed to meet a need created by activity; it doesn't work the other way. Thing is, most people who try to solve their activity shortcomings with supplements aren't the most active to begin with -- physically or mentally. So the research could be 100% credible but theanene still wouldn't be any more effective than a placebo to its enthusiasts.

Green Tea might have some good properties when it's fresh, but by the time you get your hands on it and it's gone through 12 different processing plants and warehouses, most of the beneficial stuff is gone because all of it is in the volatile oils.

I really, really hate the notion that Jager is stronger than whatever else. It's a tasty liqueur (well, if you like licorice), and not much more. 70 proof and sweetened. It will actually fark you up LESS than whiskey or any other serious hard liquor, which is always gonna be 80 proof or higher. A lot of gins and some rums are made at 92 or 94 proof, which is the traditional navy proof, for reasons I won't go into here. You want to really get farked up on licorice flavored whatever? Try asbinthe,or pernod, the version without wormwood from when our government went nuts thinking that the trace amounts of thujone somehow made a difference- they don't. Often bottled at ridiculous strengths, though you're supposed to water and sugar it down to your preferred strength and sweetness. But we're talking about a product routinely bottled at around 75% ABV (more than twice the strength of jager)- if you wanted to get really hammered, it wouldn't be a chore.

The whole frat boy myth that Jager is some super strong whatever liquor is just crap. It's stronger than some of the other liqueurs you find drunk at parties (a lot of people seem to buy schapps or whatever not noticing they're only 15% ABV, which is 30 proof, and thinking they're serious spirits), but although you may think you're being a big stud by doing two shots of Jager, that guy sipping a good old gin martini is drinking more alcohol than you are. And it is just the alcohol- there aren't any magic drugs or compounds in Jager that will do anything out of the ordinary to you- it's just the ethanol. Though the sugar might give you a high.

You...

I ..

I can't even figure out where to begin with this.

You seem to be having a serious frat-boy rage problem. I am not it.

Alcohol is pretty much alcohol, except when you start adding a lot of stuff to it that makes your body deal with it differently. I never said otherwise.

Jeager has a (well earned, IMHO) reputation for turning the politest of drinkers into slobbering smacktards.

Tequila does the same thing to some people. I just picked jeager because it has that reputation.

Don't quote me and start your "Lesson to the teenagers" speech as if I need the lesson. I'm pretty sure I've drank more Captain than you have looked at. I've worked in bars for over a decade, and I'm not an idiot when it comes to drinking.

Yes, there are some people deserving of that little speech you just gave, but I'm not them so back the hell off.

Shadow Blasko: Jeager has a (well earned, IMHO) reputation for turning the politest of drinkers into slobbering smacktards.

Tequila does the same thing to some people. I just picked jeager because it has that reputation.

Yeah, and that's still utter bullshiat. It's the ethanol, nothing else. Whiskey has the exact same effects physiologically, if you drink an amount with an equivalent amount of ethanol. Or gin. Or vodka. Or beer. There is nothing special about tequila or Jager- it doesn't make you any more wild or whatever than say, rum. You may be getting a bias in your sample where people who want to act that way believe the myth and so choose to drink those things when they want to act that way, but the spirit itself doesn't have anything to do with it. The idea that one spirit has a different effect than another is frat boy science, and deserving of scorn.

Shadow Blasko: QUICK! What proof is say... Captain Morgan?

Not the best example. Captain Morgan is watered down crap priced way higher than it should be to swindle you out of your money- very few straight spirits are bottled at a proof that low. Similar to Jack Daniels, which is is a much shiatter product than just about anything else in its price range. Just about every other rum out there is 80 proof or better- The Barbancourt I've got around right now is 83, Kraken 94, the Cruzan I have for mixing is 80. That's it on the rum, but here are a few gins: Gordons: 80. Brokers: 94. Death's Door: 94. Whiskey? Evan Williams: 86. Teacher's Scotch: 86. Black Bottle Scotch: 80. Eagle Rare: 90. Jim Beam Red Stag (somebody brought it to a party, don't judge me): 80. I have a few more things lying around I could read off, but you get the point. Captain Morgan ain't good liquor.

Protip: if a spirit is spending a massive amount of money on advertizing, you're paying for the ads and not the spirit when you buy the stuff.

A challenger appears.

Jäger has a weird effect for me -- it's one of the alcohols I can still drink when I've "had enough" of others. Presence or Absence of Red Bull doesn't change it.

I'd almost say I can't get drunk on Jäger, but that wouldn't make sense. But I hung out with some Jäger-sponsored bands and after a night of drinking pretty much everything but Jäger, I could still have a couple of shots of it without going off the deep end.

Martinis will tank you quicker and harder than Jaeger, but people tend to sip a Martini, not just toss it back.

The problem witgh Jaeger drinkers is that they will do 4-5 shots or bombs in an hour chased with three beers, or a couple of mix drinks. So it is a recipe for a quick drunk, and when you get hammered quickly, especially when mixed with red bull, then that makes for one crazy drunk fark.

So it is not the Jaeger, just the quantity in a small period of time.

I drink double ketels and soda, with a shot of patron on the side. So a drink every 20 minutes. So I ease into my inebration.

Jaeger is all about the hype.

For those that don't like standard Japanese green tea, I recommend searching out a looseleaf Chinese green tea. I drink double ketels and soda, with a shot of patron on the side. So a drink every 20 minutes. So I ease into my inebration.

Jaeger is all about the hype.

Bingo. It's how much you drink, not what you drink. If they were tossing back whiskey, they'd be even more farked up. But they're tossing back Jaeger because Jaeger has a hell of a marketing department.

somedude210: Mugato: naughtyrev: Billy Dee Williams begs to differ.

I don't know, Vader swindled him pretty good. And he obviously sucks at cards if he lost his ship to Solo. And he got nowhere with Leia.

She just wasn't sure about going black, since you can never go back and he's the only black guy in the galaxy

Lando was not the only black guy in the galaxy.

Wouldn't have guessed that, on fark, an article about green tea becomes a thread about the relative inebriating merits of jaeger and whiskey, and various malt liquors.

Red Horse, a beer made by San Miguel in the Philippines will kick your IQ down to Trump's level.

kimwim: I can't stand green tea anything. It reminds me of cow cud. Can't drink it, wash my hair with it, can't stand the ice cream version, don't like it.

I can't stand cow cud, but I drink lots of green tea.

/I'm full of flavonoids.

I don't mind the taste of cow cud. It's making out with the cow that bothers me.

jjwars1: It's not the ABV that makes jäger popular. Like Absinthe, it has a mythical reputation which is why it's popular.

I think it's the fact that it tastes like shiat unless you mix it with red bull. I love absinthe and ouzo, the licorice doesn't bother me, but the thick sticky sweetness is disgusting. On the other hand, most people hate the taste of licorice - mix that into essentially cough syrup and you have an utterly vile drink that tastes even worse on the way back up a few hours later. Of course there are going to be myths around it, just like Night Train and Four Loco. Red bull is gross enough, but even that improves Jäger.

The real reason you throw up is the sugars, though. The interaction of sugar and alcohol is pretty complex and not fully understood, but sugar is one way to get much quicker alcohol absorption, while masking some of the taste of alcohol, plus the extra free glucose followed by the extra insulin floating around your body after an hour or so messes you up. The effect on the brain is pretty minimal unless you're hypoglycemic when you start shooting, but might keep you on the dance floor a little longer.

I've heard people ascribe heart palpation to Jäger when the only way they drink it is slamming Jäger/Red Bull all night, though. Durr, maybe it's the caffeine, dude.
