I live right in the middle of the city in Wellington. Lots of folks in hobbit cloaks milling around, I can say that much!

I have been to Wellington a couple of times and have friend there. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Tried taking a LOTR tour there last year, but was told everything was booked due to a cruise ship coming into town. Fun town, if a bit windy.

I had Hobbit fever once. I got better. Though I still have more hair on my feet than I used to.

I did it. Last month there was a thread about dennys having a hobbit menu. I and madhonib stole a menu and a table tent. They look really good, and, now- if you hate dennys, please ignore this. If you do kinda like dennys, and feel like trying anything- if you order an entree, you get trading cards, allegedly collectible. One of these is a coupon for a future order. One of ours was for 20% off, no minimum amount specified. Madhonib had the Hobbit Hole Breakfast, I had the Gandalfs gobble melt- i had to, they named it after me. Hers looked better on the menu, but she liked it. I added the Shire sausage to hers, and she got about a 5 inch cooked sausage, and it was ok. Overall- the cook was having an off night with her dish.
Mine ? well, mine was a treat and a half- Potato bread ( i like it, but I thought it was going to be a bad idea for this specific sammich ) turkey, stuffing! , swiss cheese and allegedly a honey mustard cranberry dressing- I only tasted brown mustard. They also have the option of a small dish of gravy, for dipping. I highly recommend that you try it. I also had seasoned fries with ranch, catsup and mustard, also did the quadruple dip into gravy. I was only able to consume half of my order- it was big and filling and sofa king yummy. And the leftovers were great also.
Sorry- long off topic post but I hadda follow through about me plans to boost a menu, and eat there. Service sucked at the time, but I tipped enough to pay for 10 menus. Oh, we got out of there spending just over 21 bucks. Not bad for essentially 2 meals.
And no- i dont work for dennys

Oh yes-the menu is pretty damn cool- i swore to Drew a few years back that I would not post pics, so- eip if anyone wishes to see them.Plus- someone had drawn a partial penis on my sandwich pic and madhonib grabbed the wrong one. Ooops

OMG I just came (a little bit).

The dwarves are the only thing I've seen about this thing that bugs me (I don't even mind them making 3 films out of 1 book). Gloin and Oin are the only ones who match what I see in my head when I think of Tolkien dwarves. Thorin doesn't look like a dwarf so much as a weird combination of a Klingon and the movie version of the Psychlos.

Strange thing to get nerdhate about, I know but there it is.

No, you have a good point. I have had a picture of Dwarves from Tolkiens' world for about 32 years now, and Gimli fit the bill. These look, well, too tall and not so sturdy. I will still watch all 3 films

Was absolute bedlam in Middle-Middle Earth today, good fun though. And one of those Wellington-on-a-good-day days - warm, sunny, only a bit of wind. Best place in NZ for a night out, good range of things to go see, and stunning on a good day.

But he is Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King Under the Mountain, winner of the Elven blade Orcrist! He can look however he wants.

Two Wellington boots in one thread? Besides the throngs of Hobbits, Welly must be deserted.

I could have written this post myself. Went to Denny's specifically to steal a menu, but felt guilty. I asked our waitress if they offered them for sale - and she winked and told me "go ahead and take one". I increased her tip from Hobbit-size to Stone Giant sized. The food was GOOD. I am still baffled at the low priced yet massive spread I received.

If you like LOTR/Hobbit collectibles - the menu itself is a score...it's really well done. I think they did a great job with the food choices as well...the seed cake french toast and shire sausage were fantastic. The sausage looks EXACTLY like what you see Sam cooking in LOTR.

Hadn't been to Denny's in a decade...so the marketing ploy worked!!

Yes, thank you, not strange at all!

Gimli was in my mind what a Tolkien dwarf should look like. Loads of hair, including a long beard, stocky and somewhat weathered looking. When I look at the promo pic on IMDB I see 4 dwarves with very inadequate beards. Now, I don't have issue with them all and in fact several look Gimil-esque, which is good in my opinion. The one with the food in his mouth (I'm assuming that is Bombur) is a good example. Massive beard, stocky looking, solid features. But Thorin, and another one of them look like pretty-boy dwarves.

I'll still reserve judgement until I see them in action because a picture doesn't always do justice. But it has bothered me since I first caught glimpse of what they looked like.

Jackson had to contrive/embellish a romantic subplot into LOTR to get women into the theatre. He's not going to be able to swing that in the Hobbit so he needed something else to bring the chicks in. Martin Freeman wasn't going to cut it. So - pretty-boy dwarves.

Thorin is dwarven royalty. Also earned the name 'Oakenshield' during the Battle of Moria, when, after his shield was broken, he hewed a large branch off an oak tree to use for a shield.

Let me tell you, I literally do not know one single woman who went to LOTR for the "romantic subplot". Not one. They went because it was THE LORD OF THE RINGS. After the first movie, some might have gone because Aragorn was hot, but they did not go for the lame, weaksauce "romantic subplot".

And I know plenty of women (including teenagers) who are going to see The Hobbit because they think Martin Freeman is teh sex. Martin Freeman is cute and funny and intelligent and sarcastic with a British accent. Women like him.

Perhaps you should stop trying to assume what women want, because you clearly suck at it.

/Watching the American press try to get a handle on Martin Freeman is hilarious
