This is the first I've heard of discrimination against the Black Irish.

Any time somebody uses words like "honky" or "cracker" I like to yell back "Hey! That is OUR word, and you got no right using it!"

Then, after an awkward silence, they ask "Can you pass the Ritz C-words?"

I lived in Cork for years.. There was never any racism there except they didn't care for black people that came in from Africa a month before they were due and popped out a kid. Once that law was changed they didn't seem to mind Africans at all. Fairly tolerant people frankly unless your English or call Ireland "part of the UK" like a dumbass yank. Maybe it's become a new thing though since the Celtic Tiger is dead and people are hurting for money. Immigrants would certainly be a target to cast blame at instead of their own incompetent government.

When I moved there trying to get farking ANYTHING done was a feat. Gas, water, electricity, all a royal biatch to get hooked up right. It takes 3 farking years to build a house there because of all the incompetence. That's not racism or discrimination if 100% of the people are affected by the morons that run their utility system. I had to live in a hotel for 3 months while a finished house I had just purchased was "plugged into the system."

Once that was done I needed similar stuff to get the rest of the crap hooked up. Moving overseas means your entire financial history is useless.

I have relatives who actually build long ships. For fun. I was born in California, so I do not understand the Norwegian mindset a lot of the time, but I can tell you that long ships are teh KEWL! I still wouldn't run around the woods with a battle axe while invoking Odin under his name "Valfar", Viking heritage (mom is straight outta Norway) or not. That sort of thing just doesn't seem too smart to me. You sure ain't getting me to drag a long ship to the next river, either. I'll be at the smoothie stand, thanks.

In fact it wasn't that bad coming back.. I came back 5 years later and still had a decent credit rating of around 700 even though I had been inactive for 5 years. One thing I did was maintain two US bank accounts including an Etrade bank/moneymarket/stock account so I was never really "inactive." I simply used my parents address since they don't want to do business with ex pats.

(from Aarhus Denmark)...Spent a month in 2010 touring the Baltic Sea, and by touring I mean visiting the sights by day and drinking every drop of beer, mead, kilju and akvavit I could. It saddens me that every time I try to bust out the drinking horn, my friend insists on shouting "What's in your wallet?" One day he will choke on his own blood as I drink. What is this kuub you speak of? I must google now.

5 years. Should have kept a US account and credit card. Did not. Reason was it was hard to maintain wihtout a US address or someone monitoring the account(s) and feeding it (hard to fund from a foreign source - regular monetary transfers between foreign banks are expensive). So I settled with a foreign account for years. Also had foriegn employers. Only thing keeping me on the grid was reporting to Uncle Sam (AKA the IRS).

I heard this was a factor with new immigrants to the US as well. Lack of credit history will get you refused on credit cards and loans (which the former happened to me when I got back). Anyhow, just fixing up the history again with responsible paying of bills, and credit card statements.

Long ships are so seriously cool. The relatives I have that build 'em can do it without so much as a printed plan, which I understand is the "traditional method". That makes sense, because if something broke on your ship you'd have to be able to repair it on the fly. Or on the row. Whatever.

Hahahaha! I played horseshoes a couple times with some Southern type people (Okies!) and it actually took me a while to figure out what a "ringer" was and how to get one. I reverted to axe throwing contest method I use, took off my shoes, dug my big toe into the dirt when I figured where my "sweet spot" for throwing was and let 'er rip. I still didn't do too well, but at least I gave it a good go. I may have actually managed to blend with the Okies, too. Especially when I devastated the fried okra and sweet tea.
