As someone who has many Hungarian relatives, it's sad to see the country going far-right like this. Especially as Hungary was the country that started the end of the Soviet era*.

*Hungary stopped policing its western border, which led to many East Germans taking a vacation in Hungary and never coming back.

My mother's side of the family came over here to escape the Nazis (my grandparents and a few of their cousins made it out alive). My grandmother used to joke that if we were wildlife we would be an endangered species.

I hope someone puts an end to this bullshiat and fast.

Really doesn't sound all that different than the things Michelle Bachman and company spew every now and then, except they direct their hatred at Muslims.

Sorry. I am Hungarian Gypsy, not Hungarian Jew. My need to tell the endangered species joke trumped my reading comprehension. But if I recall correctly more Gypsies than Jews were killed per capita in the Holocaust. Not that those are bragging rights for anything, just my understanding of the facts as they were presented to me.

Killed per capita is a strange measure for a death toll.

"Gyongyosi, 35, is the son of a diplomat who grew up mostly in the Middle East and Asia -- Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and India -- and whose office is decorated by Iranian and Turkish souvenirs."

is it fair to say that he embraced these views as a result of where he was raised or is that racism?

Maybe they should setup some sort of BCS system to rank mass murders / genocides / war crimes. It's hard to keep proper score the way we're doing it now.

It is a measure of the effect on the population's survival chances. Not saying he's right about the numbers, but if we are talking about whether a species is endangered, we are worried about the number remaining, not the number killed.

No argument here. I just remember that being the exact phrase that she used. My maternal grandmother had a thick accent and she never gave up her heritage even though gypsies are about as respected in Europe as the Chinese were in the mid 1800s. My grandfather became true blue American as soon as he set foot on the pier. He wouldn't allow any language other than English to be spoken in his house and he did not care to hear stories about the old country. But when he wasn't around my grandmother taught me some phrases and some gypsy curses. If only for my own enjoyment over the years they have come in quite handy.

True but Alabama rednecks were raised in ignorance and don't know any better because of where they were raised. The same guy growing up in Connecticut is less likely to be a redneck or in any event he'd be a far less virulent one.

This guy was raised in the developing world's Alabama. No wonder he can't fit in with the civilized world.

So why don't gypsies have memorials and try to take measures to prevent it from happening to them again? Both Jews and Gypsies can tell the endangered species joke, but it seems like the Jews are the ones trying our best to make damn sure there won't be a Holocaust 2: Electric boogaloo. Gypsies should take notes.

/I don't know much about Gypsies.. where are they from? Where do they live?

FTA:

Gyongyosi, who leads Jobbik's foreign policy cabinet, told Parliament: "I know how many people with Hungarian ancestry live in Israel, and how many Israeli Jews live in Hungary," according to a video posted on Jobbik's website late on Monday.

"I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a national security risk to Hungary."

Isn't that translated? Is this actually what he meant?

It's not like the U.S. created a List of All Muslims in the USA after 9/11, right?

He is specifically pointing to those in Govt, those with dual loyalties. Govt is responsible to ITS people, not the people of other nations. To see the dangers of representation by people who owe allegiance foremost to a foreign land, look no further than your Texas congressional delegation.

Bullshiat, when did the U.S. ever create a list of ALL muslims? Do you honestly not see a problem with assuming people have "dual loyalties" based on their religion?

I'd wager that if his childhood influenced his political views it was by being the white son of a diplomat in a third world country. Not by assimilating the host country's values but by feeling superior to the "savages".

Somewhere around India.

They drew the short straw when it came to having a country to call their own.

They tend to belong to guilds defining their roles in Gypsy society. Ie. the performer guild, the beggars guild or the thieves guild. They do not work, or own houses. (no, I am no kidding).

I believe most Gypsys live in Hungary or Romania. But they travel a lot in Europe, especially to richer nations where they can earn more by stealing, scamming or begging.

So what you're saying is that there is a particular ethnic/religious group which is uncivilized and bad? If only there was some way to keep track of those people. A list, perhaps.

Corvus: but if you change it to "Muslims" most on the right have no problem with it.

While the European Right has largely turned their hate towards Muslims, many of them are still pretty firmly rooted in the antisemitism that defined them for most of the 20th century. Nationalism doesn't discriminate too much with who it dislikes - unless you're just like the person claiming to represent whereverthefark he comes from, you're a pox.
