Easily one of my favorite movies of all time, might be my favorite outright. Just amazing dialogue, and Rick is a great character.

The only problem I have with the plot of Casablanca, and this is more a symptom of its time than anything else, is that Rick should never have ditched the man who helped him get out of Occupied France by basically selling him to Ferrari. Sam should have gone to Brazzaville with Rick and Louis to fight with the Free French.

He didn't sell Sam. At worst he negotiated for him, like an agent.

He was looking after Sam, making sure that Ferrari was going to keep him on. And it was all because he knew where he was going, and that well, Renault and he were going to be going off killing Nazis before returning to the US to open a B&B together in San Francisco.

/ it's all there, if you look carefully

1. Did Sam really help him, or did he just go along because he was black and would've been dead in two days' time if he stayed? I might have missed that part if I'm wrong.
2. You're right, he totally didn't sell him. He basically told Ferrari that Sam had a job whether he liked it or not, and he had to treat him the same way as he had. Ferrari, knowing how integral Sam was to the cafe, agreed. Ferrari was no dummy, which is why Rick liked him.

I can only hope that the filmakers who are doing the Casablanca reboot get it. It would add a nice touch to the new movie.

/No, not serious, just kidding.

I swear to God if I find out they're gonna do a reboot of that movie I *will* hunt you down. Mostly because it will star Scarlett Johansson and some Brat Pack actor, be set in the wrong city and I will have already killed several people for doing so.

If this happens and they site either of us as a source of inspiration you'll be hunting a dead man, since I'l blow my own brains out.

If there's anything I got from the scenes with Rick and Sam in Paris, the two were basically friends and they both were in danger from the Occupation, Sam because of his skin color and Rick because he ran guns in Spain. Rick stayed in Paris for far too long, hoping Ilsa would come back, and Sam had to drag him onto the train. We never see the shenanigans it took for the two of them to get to Casablanca, but I would expect there would be some additional esprit de corps involved. For Rick to just leave Sam to Ferrari seemed jarring and false, at least to me.
