When they plugged the data into their model, and compared it to the actual patterns of the outbreaks, they found the model could predict the peaks of the outbreaks more than seven weeks ahead.

Not necessarily a bad idea if the CDC looks at Google search data + WebMD look ups by zip code. Even if kept totally anonymous, the data could easily track unreported cases and give a much better idea of how large a potential pandemic actually is. Then it's just a matter of figuring out how and where people move to forecast outbreaks. The only wild card would be rural and very poor neighborhoods, and even there you can check libraries and such.

Things like this make me wish I'd studied math in college and not English.

Ummm.... Google has been predicting flu outbreaks for years based on Searches.
