I've been on some bridges like that. Of the ones pictured, some look modern and strong, and wide enough to ride my bike across with no hands. Others, no way I'm stepping out on them.

The one in Loboc Philippines looks beautiful, a wonderful design of strength and rustic charm.

One misstep sends you falling hundreds of feet to your death or pitches you into a roaring river? Some of these bridges don't qualify. Bridges that look like they were constructed by chimpanzees do.

Some of them used steel cables...they should be off the list.

2,8,10,15,and 18 qualify as bridges are insane.

I've been across #1. It's higher up than you can tell in that picture. It's actually reasonably sturdy but I was still sweating bullets the entire time.

2012-11-27 05:34:10 PM
#2 is very similar to the bridge I went over in Papua New Guinea (no pics handy). Except it was 500ft over raging rapids in the highlands. Also, I've done the one near Arenal, Costa Rica. It's not very high up at all.

The Philippines ones win hands down in the terror department though.

I wouldn't go over a lot of those, but I don't see the big fuss over a lot of them. You think in mountainous areas with not much money or people they're going to build you a multi lane highway?

whereisyvette.files.wordpress.com

Typical bridge I crossed in Nepal when there- I liked to tease girly tourists by shouting "wow this sure looks rickety!" but there were concrete pylons and steel wires, very well done.

The view down...

What is the proper procedure for a person that trips and falls into a seated position in the middle of the bridge with their balls wedged between the slats?

Duh, post a fark thread about the situation asking for advice.

My boner would probably get caught on one of the planks and then I'd fall and die.

I don't do well with heights when I can see through what I'm stepping on (fire escapes, certain bridges, drug-induced flights, Joan of Arcesque spiritual ecstacies) I have one photo that I could post but I won't because it is incredibly unflattering of me screaming like a little girl on a bridge like this because some joker decided to make it swing.

Good times, good unfortunately documented times.

What? What do you mean, Old Subby From Scene Twenty-Four? An African, or a European Swallow?

You have to know these things when you're a subby, you know.

I have been on the one in Ireland too, it's really quite cool. It's opened seasonally.

As pointed out several times, many of these look like they're of modern manufacture and probably wouldn't fail if you put an elephant on them. Even the ones that don't look so hot are probably very safe, it's unlikely that anyone has fallen off of one. Human beings find many things out of proportionally scary to their real danger. Take modern passenger airplanes for instance. Compare the probability of a deadly crash in an airplane to the probability of fatal accident in a car. The car is many times more dangerous, yet doesn't feel so.

The Phillipine bridges are prety freaky, but that Pakistani one sends chills up my spine. It doesn't look like it'd take much for the bridge to droop right into the water. Cold muddy water just waiting to suck you away.

Challenge accepted. Just kidding. I would be curled up in the fetal position while everyone pointed and laughed.

The one in Antrim is typical of many in the UK, c.f. the one above the Tummel Gorge in Pitlochry, Scotland. Meh.

2012-11-27 08:31:11 PM
The Vancouver bridge they show is either Capilano suspension bridge or Lynn Canyon suspension bridge. Both are totally safe and sturdy. Lynn Canyon is in a provincial park. Capilano is a tourist trap.

It's the area surrounding both those bridges that are lethal. Every year tourists step out to see the view "....just one more step" or hop a fence to snap a photo and they tumble over the cliff. locals all have their "it's totally safe from here, brah!" places for cliff diving which often are not so totally safe.

Both areas are filled with "here's who fell and died here" plaques and markers.

This doesn't fall into that category. This was designed by G. Reaper & Assoc.

Does anyone remember that movie "Whitewater Summer" with Kevin Bacon? There's a scene involving a rickety hanging bridge that the geeky kid falls through.

Um, yeah.
What the hell is going on to the left? Is that the bridge that used to be there that obviously came to a bad end?

thank you sir, i was waiting for that

I'd go on a lot of these, but not the ones that are obviously falling apart.

I'd love to go canopy walking, which is usually super high, super narrow, but with a harness. Bring it on!

2012-11-27 08:49:35 PM
I'd say fark that to 8, 10, and 20. I'd still be ok with 15 as long as that is the only messed up section. The others looks perfectly fine to me.

2012-11-27 08:53:18 PM
1: No issues with crossing that bridge at all.
2: Not on your life.
3: Bit of a steep climb at the far end, but not that bad, really.
4: I'd take that chance.
5: Needs some chain-link fencing attached to the sides before I'd cross it.
6: I need a better view of it before I pass judgement.
7: See 1 above.
8: FARK NO! Not even if it was necessary to save my life! That thing scares me just looking at the picture!
9: Not too bad, I'd cross it.
10: See 8 above!
11: See 1 above.
12: Best one of the lot. Race ya across!
13: You call *that* a "hanging" bridge?
14: See 5 above.
15: See 8 above!
16: See 9 above.
17: Only if I had to.
18: As for 16.
19: See 9 above.
20: Hell, NO!
21: Fun bridge and probably a great view!
22: There's worse on this list, and there's better.
23: Need a better view of the bridge.

2012-11-27 08:53:54 PM
Ok, that's some really good nightmare material there.

/shudder

There are 23, not 21, Subby.

[picardlights.jpg]

Most pics don't show what's beneath, which can be more terrifying. For example, the Grand Canyon Skywalk is supposed to be able to support 71 loaded 747s or a 8.0 earthquake -- but there is no farking way I could set foot on a glass-bottomed bridge 2/3 mile up.

I work at an airport and remind people this daily. Of the thousands that we toss up every day how many don't come back? It makes the news. Now how many died in car accidents that day? Same thing with Muslims. One, ok a few but they are mostly drunk, of the locals says he gets nervous when he sees Muslims at the airport. I called him a pussy and a moron, oh and a pussy for good measure. I was slammed by a deer in front of the airport. I am far more afraid of deer than any Muslim. Last time I checked Muslims don't have antlers, can't gore you and don't come flying into the driver's window.
