Amazingly, not a Tront joint.

So.... she participated in a girls-only LARP, and wrote an article about it.

I'm not sure which confuses me more, that she wrote the article in the first place or that so many people in TFA's comment section spewed off about how it's a giant waste of time.

I think my favorite part was the LARP writer being upset that her railroad attempt for her previous 1942 LARP failed. Saying that they were supposed to get upset at having to shoot a prisoner and then getting pissy that their commanding officer did it to spare them from that horror smacks of the worst writing. If you don't want your players to actually play, don't run the game.

Didn't read any of it. Scrolled down and saw a bottle of Bulleit bourbon, though, and got an idea.

I love it too.  We would eat it on Thanksgiving AND Christmas so I get a big craving for it around this time of year.  There is only one place in Brooklyn that sells it.

Holy smokes, although it is not how I would prepare it (I like it like a burrito with cod, lutefisk, butter, and salt rolled up in a potato lefse) I am so ordering this.

All that struck me was the sad, sad use of the awesome vertigo tarot. Way to take something cool and attach it to something so lame - without even proper attribution ("like a Dave McKean Cover"?! They are Dave McKeans you twunt).

I've done two sets of LARPs in my life. One set was the Legend of the Five Rings events AEG did at GenCon (really fun, and no vampires), and the other was National Strategic Decision Making. I ran into these folks at a couple of historical wargaming conventions over the years, and it's a cross between a model UN and a LARP. Actually quite fun, a sort of beer-and-pretzels level of role-playing with all the backstabbing you could squeeze out of a game of Diplomacy.

2012-11-27 05:32:16 PM
WTF did I just read? Was this an intentional effort to make role-playing as boring as possible, or is it all a result of one player bringing way way too much emotional baggage to what should have been a rather mundane group scenario?

Meh. Try surviving an Amber Throne War, much less winning it.

There's plenty of Larps out there with more emphasis on character development and socio-political maneuvering. They don't have to be the extremes of "fireballfirballfireballfireballfireball" and 'womyn's drum circle'.

Beginning of November, I was at a con where I played in a Baron Munchausen game with 4 other players where the theme was 'superhero bar' instead of 'Prussian nobility in a tavern'. Between the 5 of us, over the course of 4 hours we drank (irl, not in game) a bottle of Kraken, 1 bottle of red wine, half a bottle of whiskey, and various beers and nightcaps. The highlight was the guy playing Rorschach saying "I liked the chocolatini, it reminded me of an abattoir full of retarded children".

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman :) .

I've no longer a lot of time for roleplaying games (this is the sole reason I've merged myself in Skyrim and Neverwinter nights mods), but I never wanted to LARP, mostly because the LARPers had some really awesome stuff, and I had to grab some cheap foam sword.

2012-11-27 06:57:43 PM
...surely none of this is new to the world of roleplaying?
OK the specific plot may have not been done before, and the women only aspect is interesting but the whole character driven freeform larp thing has been around for years...
I'm not a big larp fan, I had a few bad experiences in the '90s but I heartily encourage others to give them a go.

Whether it's rubber swords lrp or character driven emotional larps I've seen to many people come out of them entertained and enriched to poo poo them.

My favorite LARP has always been Dark Confrontation. Played it for the first time at Hurricon long, long ago(and it was only the second time that DC had been played), then the following year at DragonCon, and then at the first Dark Weekend. Fun as hell stuff.

Also did LAV for awhile, was the local Sheriff, was fun for a bit and then got bored.
