FTA - act of terrorism that resulted in the deaths of four African-American girls in 1963.

Forgive me if I'm skeptical about that letter. I was around in the1970s and never once heard the term African-American. In fact when I did start to hear the term it was in the mid to late 1980s and my black friends just thought it was pretty condescending.

/One of them stared using Caucasus-Americans when describing white folk, and it seemed to catch on with several of my friends and coworkers

I don't believe the term "African-American" was in the actual letter. Just used here as the appropriate term of our times.

That Bill Baxley was quite a magician with his pen. His kid Eddie was nice, too.

Ah.

Well, what was the letter to which he was responding? Right now it's reading like the wrong end of a Bob Newhart routine.

Correct, the text below the actual letter is closer to contemporary.

In 1970, shortly after being elected Attorney General of Alabama, 29-year-old Bill Baxley reopened the 16th Street Church bombing case - a racially motivated act of terrorism that resulted in the deaths of four African-American girls in 1963 and a fruitless investigation, and which marked a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. Baxley's unwavering commitment to the case attracted much hostility, particularly from local Klansmen, and in 1976 he received a threatening letter of protest from white supremacist Edward R. Fields - founder of the "National States' Rights Party" and "Grand Dragon" of the New Order Knights of the Ku Klux Klan - in which he was accused of reopening the case for tactical reasons.

Good point. The term the grand master of the kkk would have used would never have made it to the public site.

I would like to take this rare opportunity to point out that not all Alabamians are bigoted assholes. They do, no doubt, have control of the state now. Hopefully more sane citizens will eventually gain control.

Mr. Baxley responded correctly. The appropriate response to anything the KKK might say to you is and always will be, "kiss my ass."

The KKK isn't a unified organization. Many Rico cases in the 80's and 90's saw to that. Each "chapter" is its own orginazation; with its own command structure and goals.

/ History channel did a 2 or 3 hour documentary on the KKK in the early 2000's that explains it better.

The Men Who Built America

was pretty good. Lots of playing up stuff for drama, but it's a nice spotlight on the Robber Baron era. It's a good balance of "these men were incredibly forward-looking and laid the foundation for the entire 20th century" and "they were some ruthless and evil motherfarkers."

/Henry Frick especially on the evil side. Holy shiatballs.

Hmm, let's see:

1. No signature;

2. No date;

3. Width of the message does not correspond to standard paper;

4. Allegedly written in 1974, but did not surface until 38 years later.

Looks well short of genuine to me.
