They smell blood in the water. Elmo is a cash cow (toys, books, he's King of all Children's Media) so here's a chance to get some sweet settlement to keep moms and dads buying Elmo products for their kids.

They (the accusers) know PBS/Sesame Workshop would rather settle a (potentially) false lawsuit than have a public fight about it.

I agree that these allegations are probably fake. But Sesame Workshop cannot and should not take responsibility for an employee's private actions. The accusers may go after them, but their lawyers need only say: fark off.

So far all three of these alleged underage gays say met Clash in a gay chatroom. If they were underage and hanging out in chatrooms, they knew what the deal was. To come back 12 years later and make accusations is ridiculous. No judge should even hear their cases; they should be summarily dismissed.

Shocking, people see an opportunity to get rich and lawyer up instead of going to the police... I totally believe these allegations aren't at all motivated by the millions of dollars they're suing for.

OK, so if these actually happened, why are we only hearing about lawsuits? Why go directly to CTW? Shouldn't they be going to, you know, the police? There is no Statute of Limitations with this type of crime anymore, so it is not that it happened years ago.

Money grab. Plain and simple.

Wow, i wonder if you would feel the need to defend him if he was banging 16 year old chicks or is it because he is gay and this might look bad on that whole protected class thing?

Not to mention, that documentary about Clash came out a relatively short time ago, making it really clear that Elmo was one dude rather than a generic character.

This wouldn't get any press or carry any weight if it was "some random dude who works for Sesame Street", but now that everyone KNOWS that Clash basically is Elmo, it's huge. This wouldn't have flown before that documentary, I'd bet.

So not only is the jump to lawsuit questionable, the timing is also damning.

When this first came up (no pun intended) it was Elmo puppeteer in underage sex scandal, so the first thought was that he was bagging 10 year olds that were on the Sesame street set. Hang him high!

Then as you actually read past the headlines, it was 16 years olds, they met in a gay chat room, they got together for consensual sex, and now it's like...well not so sure what the issue is

Probably, but it's not uncommon for an offender to have several victims before being caught.

At this point, it's better to wait and see...

How are you a victim when you chat and plan out whats going to happen and then knowingly meet the person, and then not complain for 10 years?

16yo hooks up with a guy on a site for guys to hook up.... profit?

Sorry, don't get that one.

People in positions like this really should be more careful. Being gay is enough liability (in the eyes of some people). Having hookups is a liability for anyone. Having gay hookups when you're the frelling voice of Elmo is pretty unwise, regardless of the ages.

Hoping this gets taken care of with a minimum of collateral damage.

moothemagiccow: Not sex - random casual sex, promiscuity

In other words: sex.

You're not changing the definition of those three letters here, you're just adding adjectives, adjectives are nearly always a matter of perspective. There is no empirically sound formula for deciding when a person's sex life is worthy of the term "promiscuity". I'm pretty certain it isn't hard to find hundreds, if not thousands of public figures who have had way more sex partners in the same amount of time. Some indeed do suffer scrutiny as a result of it. Many- in particular many celebrities- are talked about for a short bit, then dismissed. This behavior is apparently expected for those people. It's a damned double-standard, and it's not hard to see how that comes about.

Random?

Even Sheldon Stevens' first story claimed he was with Clash for seven years. Granted, that figure in no small part hinges on whether or not Clash did indeed have sex with Stevens when he was sixteen, but even if you shorten it a couple years to account for the possibility that it's a damn dirty lie, you still have a period of time that's more stable than most heterosexual marriages. "Random" isn't the word I'd choose to describe this. It sounds pretty damn deliberate.

Casual?

Have you ever had "Formal Sex"? No? How about Doctrinal Sex? Canon Sex? None of those? I think it's safe to say "naked and heaving on another human being" is about as casual as it gets.

Mind you, I don't know, nor care if these allegations are true or not, but the distinctions you're desperately trying to draw here are utterly hilarious in their inadequacies.

No, he said that he wants to take the money away from the public broadcaster used to buy the rights to show Sesame Street. There is quite a significant difference.

Old knee jerk reaction: He's gay, so he must be a paedophile! Keep the children away!
Modern knee jerk reaction: He's gay, so he can't be a paedophile! Shun those greedy liars!

The truth? Good question, one that the courts must decide.

Ephebophilia is still sexual predation, people. (No matter how many creepy bastards here on Fark want to bang teens; it's still wrong in every sense.) Forget the "almost the age of consent" nonsense for a moment and remember that he was more than twice the age of the individuals he has admitted to sleeping with. We're not talking about a freshly turned 18 year old sleeping with an almost 17 year old, but a man who had four decades to his name sleeping with 16-18 year olds. That there is predatory behavior: the older and experienced preying on the weak and inexperienced.

Anyone who has achieved a grown up, adult mind and is being honest with themselves can appreciate that decisions made about sex in the late teens were anything but mature, responsible and well-thought out. For an older man to target that age group for sex...that's just messed up.

Is this going to be like with Michael Jackson, where as the story got more and more attention more and more people "came out" accusing him of molesting their kids, only for them to admit later that they lied and only wanted money and attention?

I had none of those limits on driving when I was 16 and was watching Silence of the Lambs, Rocky Horror and the like pretty regularly at 13. Even at 16, without Internet, I had some easy access to hardcore porn. I wonder who I should sue.

Thanks for pointing out how bad we're babying teenagers nowadays.

Huh?
PBS/CTVW/Sesame Street are NOT involved in this in any way, shape or form.

On the other hand - nice to see that someone presented as a gay role model turns out to be just as sleazy/skeezy as any normal person. Yeah, I said 'normal'; gays are 3% of the population and gay pedophiles an even smaller percentage so neither qualifies as 'normal'.

Ssuming the worst, he probably hooked up with a bunch of guys of guys in their late teens, and now that this story in the news, said Twinks are realizing "hey, that's the John Smith I hooked up with in a Motel 6!" They were either barely underage, or barely legal. Close enough for them to feel they can get in on the civil suit.

I like how the lawyer had him file as a John Doe -- trying to signal that his client should be treated like a rape victim. May be technically justifiable because they say the victim was 16, but that was 13 years ago. Of course his real name will be outed. And their story is that the 16 year old met Elmo because he (the victim) was trolling for men. Case sounds like a real stinker.
