What? How do you use nuclear power, to generate heat, to power a stirling engine, to generate electricity, to go somewhere... in space? Do those 24 watts ionize atoms which are shot out the back of the ship? I don't get it. The article was pretty clear about scaling up to 1kW, which is great but how do you turn that into the motion of the ship?

FTFA: A small, simple, lightweight fission power system could lead to a new and enhanced capability for space science and exploration," said Los Alamos project lead Patrick McClure.

I get that you could power more gizmos with a nuclear reactor, but how is it helping you to move around?

It doesn't. It's just producing electricity to power the electronics.

How would this compare with a RTG ?

leakybucket: How would this compare with a RTG ?

It's a replacement. Since we no longer produce the radioisotopes needed for RTG's we need to find a replacement.

What's the thrust-to-weight ratio on a guy jacking it anyway?

/Someone should posit that question to XKCD
//Not it.

While this is for onboard power needs, scaling it up with more modules frees up energy for an ion drive. Ion power is good for non-manned probes, too slow for Manned space flight, the specific impulse is awesome, but the thrust is faint.
