Nice.

It may be time to replace my Wii which now makes a horrid buzzing noise every time its on.

Does anyone know - if I buy a new Wii do I get to keep my virtual console games? I was going to replace the Wii a couple years ago and at the time Nintendo support said that it was not possible to do this so I didn't buy one.

I don't want to have to re-buy all those Castlevanias.

BumpInTheNight: Yah because the original Wii is such a space-hog to begin with...

Yeah, there's not a lot of need to shrink it. The PS3 and 360 really needed their form revisions for various reasons. The Wii, not so much.

But then, for some reason I thought the Wii was going away in favor of the Wii U. Shows how much attention I've been paying to Nintendo lately.

IIRC, games are tied to the console they were bought on. The Wii U has this same issue.

Oh I use those too - on my home computers and my work computer (shhh) and even my phone.
My four year old daughter loves "castle-zahnia" and many other old games too and is not particularly savvy with console emulators. Plus there's something lost on those emus with me and the virtual console does have a lot of games which you can't find (good) roms of.

Yup. Nintendo Customer Service told me that it's only possible to transfer games from a Wii to a WiiU, or from a 3DS to another 3DS. No other VC transfers are possible.

But the Wii Mini is Canada-only, so most of us won't have to worry about it.

All my Wii U virtual games transferred over from my old Wii. The have a transfer app that has you put an SD card in the old Wii, download your virtual games and save files, then move them to the Wii U. Worked perfectly for me, although it took about 30 minutes.

Why would anyone buy all that stuff when softmodding the console and installing every emulator/ROM in existence via the Homebrew Channel is easier than tying your shoes?

I have been an exclusively Wii gamer for the past year or so.
The XBox crapped out on me for the last time, and I thought, "Hey, wouldn't it be novel to spend a year with nothing but a friggin' Wii? Can it be DONE???" I even thought about blogging about the experience. "The Wii Experiment" was going to be my blog's title....

Anyway, I never bothered with that part of it, but the results are in, and I can say that it is indeed possible for a gamer to be satisfied with only a Wii (assuming you also pay Gamecube games on it) for one year...but once you reach the eight month mark or so, you'll really start to get desperate for decent games.

The system just BARELY has enough quality titles to justify its existence.

Sadly, I do think that Nintendo has lost its touch. Even the new Mario games are strictly ho-hum.I'll be skipping the Wii U and getting a PS3 soon.

still don't understand buying and then modding consoles to play roms when you can just play roms on a pc or laptop already

i have one (a wii u), it IS ho-hum right now but still fun, on the plus side nothing about the system is going to age it as quickly as the Wii did, on the downside "AAA 3rd party blockbusters" probably won't sell on it if they get ported at all, of course there will be fewer and fewer of those kind of games on consoles as time goes on so we'll see if it's really 2007 with the PS3 all over again or if that industry is long-gone and we're truly in a new era

if they drop the price and release some system seller games i could see it filling that wii role again as a companion device, at the very least its got the best version of netflix of any console right now (similar to AppleTV's stellar version)

Further to this the Wii Mini does not have internet access. This new console is strictly for disk games.

But at $99, that's a frigging steal.

let's see i could play old games on a wiimote (limited to NES games and that's it really...) or i could play NES/Genesis/N64/PS1/etc. games on a myriad of amazingly great controllers with native Windows support... my PC is always on (no bootup time), every graphics card has HDMI support (better than the Wii's component cables), windows can update in the background, and skype/msn/whatever being distracting is a personal problem

Well I guess we can't all be as awesome as you are. If you're softmodding a wii to play emulated games you're doing it wrong, use XBMC or a Playstation and hey look you have a great controller. Historically, one of the best years (in hardware sales) for a gaming platform is the year after the next generation launches. There's a lot of poor people who can't drop $200~500 on a new console, meanwhile the market is flooded with affordable used titles from those upgrading to the next gen, which make it worthwhile to drop $100 on the previous generation hardware.

Demand for the prior generation tends to stick around for some time, and if done right can linger around for several years. I think Microsoft is the one exception to this, who instead of launching a cost down version of the X-Box when the 360 launched, basically just shiat canned the first generation.

ok sure, if you have a very limited budget and/or don't own a computer or tv made in the last 3-4 years, then softmodding a $100 wii would work

my gripe is with people who throw money around buying gadgets only to do something with them they could already do, it's pretty common for people to buy devices way more expensive than a wii just for the softmodding of emulators, i simply question why people do that kind of stuff... why not save your money?

It was a marketing email. Son has a Wii, wants a Wii U.

Problem, he plays skyrim all the time...why would I buy a Wii U?

I think the wii U will need a year or two to really come into it's own, games wise. Needs it's heavy hitters out first. The 3ds had similar growing pains to it. The Vita....lets not go there, i've no clue what sony is trying to do with it, and I own one of them.

I'm wondering how the ps4/nextbox will change things up, but there are very few leaks to be had with a damn for ether.

The nextbox sounds like MS is going all out on power, like the original xbox, and pushing their surface and kinect technologies. Same basic path as the current Xbox, but with a massive spec bump.

The ps4 is sounding like a modified AMD APU + AMD GPU, with loads of ram, but no other real details. APU's are still pretty new as a concept, Pc performance hasn't been too kind with them, but console optimizations, and AMD's chip choice (piledriver versus bulldozer) could make the difference. No idea what their marketing hook for this will be. No word on camera/controller, etc.

i have one (a wii u), it IS ho-hum right now but still fun, on the plus side nothing about the system is going to age it as quickly as the Wii did, on the downside "AAA 3rd party blockbusters" probably won't sell on it if they get ported at all, of course there will be fewer and fewer of those kind of games on consoles as time goes on so we'll see if it's really 2007 with the PS3 all over again or if that industry is long-gone and we're truly in a new era

if they drop the price and release some system seller games i could see it filling that wii role again as a companion device, at the very least its got the best version of netflix of any console right now (similar to AppleTV's stellar version)

The ne ...

yeah i can see the comparison to the 3ds with the wii u, with the big difference being nintendo probably isn't in a position to discount the wii u as quickly as they did with the 3ds... i mean even if they had the option, it says a lot about nintendo as a hardware maker if the only thing that can move their stuff anymore are deep discounts, it cheapens the brand and undercuts their ability to R&D better hardware the next go-around, not to mention it would drive shareholders crazy who want them to leave hardware altogether

sony is in a lot of trouble altogether, the vita kinda exists in a vacuum where it's still 2006 and the sony portable market can still be righted... except it's 2012 and nobody wants a sony portable anymore, even if it's probably the best hardware launch since the dreamcast... the rest of sony is just such a mess, their financials don't justify letting the rest of the company take a hit for the gaming division even tho the gaming division is the only electronics division making a profit, historically they should be in a position to rebound, and them getting a foothold in China is a start

microsoft has the most to lose, historically every company's 3rd console is too ambitious for its own good and i see nothing about the 720 that bucks that trend, having so much focus on kinect 2.0 and XBL and Metro/Win8 integration and Surface and experimental pricing schemes and a super-powerful system feels like every department in microsoft sticking their hand in the pie, makes the whole thing feel like the hindenburg of the next generation of consoles

WHY DOES THIS NOT EXIST.

The last game to successfully give a good flexible / evil as crap DM interface was Neverwinter Nights...i would actually buy a WiiU if this shiat came out and i've turned into a hollow Xbro shell of my former DND nerd self.
