(Core 77)   Gear systems that can change speed, change direction, rotate in the same direction despite being in contact, cubical gears that retain their shape, etc. I am sooooo high right now   (core77.com) divider line 9

That cube gear was pretty neat. It looks like the drawing would rely on downwards pressure?

What would the cube gear thing be used for?

If we're talking about gears, then I'll mention that this movie is a personal favorite.

Nothing practical that I can think of. It just looks cool. Similar to the heart gear.

They're made out of a slippery material, and they just spin by force of the spirals pushing on each other.

I could watch the same direction gears forever.

I'm not sure if you guys just have shiat spatial reasoning skills, but it's really not that complicated.

It's not transferring the rotational energy like a traditional gear does. It is basically a set of screw gears, except shaped such that the axial rotation translates to a pushing force parallel to the axis, which pushes the gear next to it in the same parallel-to-axis direction, and the shape of the second gear translates that movement into a rotation again. Same from the second to the third gear.

I just don't get what's so complicated about this. It's also going to destroy itself, as the surfaces are rubbing against each other.
