Celerian: jack21221: I'm having a hard time imagining myself getting "apps" for my computer. Is this somehow different than a normal computer program? Or is it a new name for the same thing?Basically new name for the same thing. The entire concept is to make a Operating System that would make it easy to sync Desktop/Laptop/Tablet/Phone together, so you have a Microsoft account that if you download a News App on your desktop, when you pick up your phone, that App is there too, ready to go with your settings. Normally the Apps are small, quick, and do one task. They install easily from the store. Many are free, some are a small cost. But you can still install programs normally, as well.
bossjock77: Celerian: How do you feel about Windows Vista?Worst. OS. EVAR!!
Celerian: Yes, Win8 is different. Win8 has a learning curve. Win8 is blending and blurring the lines and making us think differently about the desktop environment. It may or may not work, but unless you've tried it, and given it a good solid chance, don't hate on it. Its not that bad.
randroid: The only way to deploy a metro app outside of the app store permanently is if you're on a domain. Seems like the kind of thing they could easily patch out. If they'll actually do it remains to be seen.
WhippingBoy: abhorrent1: Unfortunately, my wife is not all that tech-savvy so I kind of have mixed feelings about getting a new W8 pc. I want too, but I don't want to listen to the biatching either. My wife complains about everything (seriously, we need to put together a small "Earthquake kit" for the kid's school which required us to buy a few small items that we didn't already have; she went on and on about how this was going to ruin her entire week. I stopped off the store and had it done in under 10 minutes). But I digress... in any case, I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on our family PC. Sure enough, literally two seconds after trying it, it was the "stupidest thing ever". The surprising thing is that her biatching ceased after using it for about 15 minutes (which is a record). I haven't heard her complain about it since.
Linux_Yes: good. let them dismantle that patched up mess.
abhorrent1: Icetech3: Umm... subby is on crack... i have owned a computer store for 24 years now... so far my customers are loving 8I've really heard nothing but good things about it from people I know that have it. These are tech-savvy people too, not my mom. Unfortunately, my wife is not all that tech-savvy so I kind of have mixed feelings about getting a new W8 pc. I want too, but I don't want to listen to the biatching either.
WhippingBoy: Subby, there's a risk that you take when you try to be "cool and edgy" by slamming something you think everyone will hate. It makes you look like a collosal ignoramus.
