Hell, why bother with gondolas? Just build long cables throughout the city with really big clothespins for passengers.

Gondolas? Easy to escape off of.

Yeah, it's call the Roosevelt Island Tram in NYC. Though I think they should totally extend it so it makes stops and goes all the way across Manhattan. Would make it much more useful.

That seems really cool, and I'd love one... but how can these possibly be handicap accessible?

Well its Austin.

t3knomanser: That seems really cool, and I'd love one... but how can these possibly be handicap accessible?

Depends upon what method they go with. There are large box based gondolas like the previously mentioned http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_Island_Tramway

But yes, individual ski lift style would be similar and cheaper, might might not be handicap accessible.

So can you make a sky ride sufficiently safe from intentional vandalism, or cars or trucks or cranes hitting the supports?

If so, these could be very nice as the power could be cleaner electricity than gas powered cars, and a brand new system could allow for various mid route stations that reroute gondolas from one cable route to another intersecting cable route. So you're there in your gondola going uptown and via your phone app your gondola is shifted to the crosstown cable automatically.

Add in some steampunk and replace the asphalt streets with grass or a mall and it's a huge win.

Also, make some of the gondolas carry digital advertising, maybe encouraging people to move to an off world colony.

Can you make buildings sufficiently safe from people flying jumbo jets into them? Can you make buses, trains and subway cars safe from people leaving back-packs full of explosives on them?

No matter what you build, there is a way to break it.

But, if you blow up a bus, train, subway car or jet, you take out that vehicle. By cutting a gondola cable, you could potentially hit dozens of them at once.

Easy, but expensive workaround, is to have a dual cable system, one continuous and driven at the terminals, and the other passive and looping only between adjacent support towers.

Emergency brakes and clamps that engage whenever there is a loss of tension, perhaps. Maybe electrical monitoring like in train tracks: loss of signal engages the emergency systems.

Who the fark would use this even in Austin? We should invest in transportation that is faster.

1.) Clear the roads of farking 18 wheelers with better convoy infrastructure for moving goods.
2.) Introduce HSR connecting large cities and suburban areas into the city.
3.) Create multi-use spaces to facilitate people walking and riding their bikes more often and living where they work.
4.) Get rid of the farking bums ruining walking around the city.
5.) Create more sky-walks.
6.) Put in express-ways that allow vehicles to hop on where your vehicle is auto-piloted in a highly efficient manner to control "rush hour" traffic from commuters.
7.) Continue exploring alternative energy sources to mix with the above.

I fail to see how even the fastest emergency brakes would help you there, if the wire snaps. This isn't cartoon physics.

Scratch that... I withdraw my snark - you meant brakes on the towers.
