Things have been so much better since we began calling those people with low IQs "developmentally challeneged" and not "retards", amirite? Think how much better off we'll be when we refer to those who irrationally hate homosexuals as "anti-gay" and not "homophobes".

If it's illegal for you to work at the company, because, for example, it's a school and you're a registered sex offender, then every single moment you spend at work you are committing a crime. You would then be an "illegal employee". I'm truly amazed that you can't understand the difference between that situation and a one-time act.

Well done. Consider yourself favorited.

"Ethnic cleansing" was an infuriating euphemism that made torture, murder, terrorism, property destruction and forcing people to flee their homes sound like a new detergen. It was double speak. Murder is not a cleansing. It is the type of language that Hitlers, Stalins and terrorist warlords use.

"Homophobia" is unfortunate only in that most phobias are a specific type of debilating mental condition, an exagerated fear of something generally harmless like toy balloons or cats. On the other hand, isn't a fear of homosexuals an exagerated fear of something generally harmless? Gay sex involves nothing that heterosexuals don't do. In fact, from the polls I've seen, anal intercourse, the most taboo gay sex act, is about as common among heterosexuals as homosexuals and bisexuals. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO WITH ANOTHER MAN THAT YOU CAN NOT DO IN A HETEROSEXUAL SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP. Even more so if you consider lesbian sex rather than gay male sex.

"Islamophobia" is a useful term for those who are bigoted against Islam, prejudiced against Muslims, and racist against the races that are most likely to be Muslim. We have Anti-Semitism, otherwise we don't have any regular terms to describe religious prejudice so extreme it runs to genocidal urges or acts. Islamophobia is literally an irrational fear of Islam. Why is this different from an irrational fear of cats, apart from the fact that people who are irrationally afraid of cats aren't prone to attempting genocide or mass- forced conversion or the cultural "integration" of cats.

Undocumented workers is bureaucratese. Although bureaucratese is out-of-place in common discourse, it is often useful in bureaucratic or legal settings because it says what it means unambiguously. Bureaucrats and medical personnel don't say blind because it is a loaded term which suggests purblind when many people with visual disabilities or people who are vision-impaired have some sight. There is tunnel vision, blind spots, limited acuity of vision, night-blindness and many other kinds of problems with vision.

Extreme myopia for example doesn't prevent you from reading. You just have to hold the text less than six inches in front of your face. "Blind" tends to suggest purblind--total inability to detect even a bright light or to distinguish any object by sight, while most visually impaired people are not purblnd--some can see perfectly well but only acrosss the middle of the normal field of view or only around the edges. Without my glasses I am visually impaired, not blind. I suffer not from blindness but myopia, stygmaism, presbyropia and declining ability to deal with certain types of interference, such as extremely busy graphic design.

In short, many of the most annoying neologisms, jargon, and even euphemism have legitimate uses as well as illegitimate uses. I contend, for example, that it is OK to advertise for a chair-person but that when you have obtained one who is a woman, you should call her the Chair Woman, or if that emphasizes her sex too much, then all chair persons should be referred to as simply "the Chair" unless you are addressing them directly as Mr. Chairman or Ms. Chair-Woman. English has ways and means of making you talk correctly and accurately.

Calling people "illegals" is prejudicial. People are a lot more things than "illegal". They are parents looking to provide for their children, they are workers looking for an honest living, they are the gap of several million people between what the law allows across the border to work and what the economy demands--a gap that exists because selfish taxpayers refuse to pay for education, health care, etc. so long as they can milk the cow for free. Here's a simple solution: for each low skilled worker the economy needs from Mexico or somewhere with a surplus of working age people, export one Republican retiree to Mexico. Problem solved. The worker gap will fill itself in a free market solution, and the Republican anti-tax fanatic problem will slowly vanish as they realize who is really the entitlement sucking scum in your country, namely conservative old people who didn't pay for their unexpected fifty years of social security and are damned they are going to pay for their medicare.

These people are not undocumented workers. They are workers, period. They are illegal workers because you made them illegal. Why did you do that? You let white people into this country without even taking down their damn names for three, four hundred years.

We know why you have your ancient knickers in a knot. You are bigoted, racist, xenophobic, reactionary old nativists. There should be no quota on the number of you useless white conservative entitlement-suckers who get deported to Costa Rica. Start with Rush Limbaugh. He thinks Costa Rica has a great health care system. It does. For a poor country. Let him get his healthcare in his new home, where you are not paid millions of dollars a year to be a fat-headed blow-hard.

I don't mind Fox News being a wing of the Republican Party (the right wing, even). It's the Republican Party being the tail of the Beast Murdoch that gets my goat. Fox wags tail, not tail Fox.

Kevin72: stiletto_the_wise: Three Crooked Squirrels: Well, "undocumented immigrants" doesn't appear in the article (unless I missed it). But I have a problem with that, too. The right's use of "illegals" makes me cringe, as it is a clear attempt to dehumanize. The left's use of "undocumented immigrant" also bothers me, as they are more than undocumented, they are here illegally. Call them "illegal immigrants". It's what they are without connotation. Then fix the farking problem.

The problem with the term "illegal immigrant" is that it implies the person's very existence is illegal. You're an illegal person. Which is not true. A more accurate term would emphasize that the person's past action was illegal, not the person himself. The person is undocumented, not illegal. His past action was illegal.

Except that every second that they exist in this country as a citizen of another country in this country they are illegal and breaking the law and living underground with fear of deportation lalalala. What you are saying is if I steal your wife's $10,000 diamond ring I'm only guilty at the moment of theft, not after I keep it or sell it.

I sound fat: Giant pet peeve here. When people start trying to define what IS a word and what ISNT a word, those people cease having any credibility.

(inlcuding your fourth grade teacher telling you "aint aint a word", because frankly, it is)

If both the person speaking and the intended audience knows the meaning of a word, and that meaning is successfully conveyed by using it, then the word is, in fact, a word. You dont get to be smarter because you know what words are "official".

You just get to come off as a pompous ass.

Yes, it is, because it doesn't describe fear, which is what a phobia is. If it did, people with homophobia would yell "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!" and run away from gay people. Which would be pretty gay if a dude did it.

Im liberal, vote democrat for the most part, and would be fine with open borders.

There is nothing wrong with the term illegal alien. Illegal immigrant rules out illegal non-immigrants and is too specific. Illegal for short is fine and doesn't bother me.

I never understood what was so bad about "Mexicans" in the first place.

You know the answer, of course, but you're either a bigot yourself or trying to make a self-congratulatory point: Because there are individuals who are legitimately bothered by illegal immigration regardless of country of origin who don't care about legal immigrants.
