Toronto is the 6th most populous metro area in North America. Kind of a big deal.

No, it was that he voted to cancel a ruling that he needed to pay back the money.

dogfather_jr: I don't think Ford is a good politician or even a good Mayor - but I'd be happier to have him reprimanded some other way as opposed to spending $7 million to elect somebody else.

Unfortunately, it's the only way he'll actually learn. He has had tons of formal reprimands and he hasn't learned from his mistakes at all, and in many cases, has just doubled-down. Anything short of removing him from office is just another thing he can ignore. You can't give him a worthwhile fine - the guy is loaded. You can't give him a strongly-worded reprimand because he doesn't care. You can't make him apologize because the one time he was forced to do that, literally the only thing he said was "sorry".

Leaving him in power just lets him continue his abuses and mistakes.

I get that Ford broke the rules but I think this is asinine.

He broke the law but had ample opportunity to correct it but refused out of pig-headed stupidity. He did this to himself.

Well, (appearance-wise) he could easily pass as an American, so there's that...

Attitude and personality wise too. The few clips I've seen of him makes him seem like an obnoxious douche.

The most irritating and obnoxious you can possibly imagine.

Spoiled by a super-rich dad. Huge sense of entitlement. Enormous superiority complex.

Has done more harm to the City of Toronto than I ever thought possible.

The douchiest douche that ever douched.

Nah, he didn't pander to the rich, he pandered to the selfish. Which admittedly has a large overlap, but all rich aren't selfish, and many selfish aren't rich.

And it's almost certain he'll appeal this, so it's not - sadly - over with yet.

(For those unfamiliar...this guy actually makes Kittenmuncher McSweatervest look good in comparison, or at least less evil. At least Kittenmuncher McSweatervest wasn't caught posing for a photo opportunity with the former lead guitarist for the hate-rock band RaHoWa and later went on to be one of the top leaders for "white pride" derptardom in Canada, nor did Kitten McSweatervest try to pass off said photo op as "me and the guy talking transit issues, and besides, I didn't KNOW he was a racist leader and he used a fake name besides and plz don't kick me out of office or think I'm a seig-heiling derpmonger kthx". Ford promised the 'burbs free subways, got rid of the vehicle registration tax (which actually provided INCOME to the city), has been fighting a ban on plastic bags (which most people seem to have adapted to just fine), promised to cut back on waste at City Hall (without defining what "waste" was exactly), then bragged of his successes.

He managed to alienate even his own supporters in council, skipped council meetings to go coach football, used city services like his own personal employees, openly broke the law on multiple occasions, threatened reporters and punished news outlets he didn't like, skipped City functions to go to the family cottage, and made himself a laughingstock over ridiculous antics like his "cut the waist" challenge (which he later cancelled because the media was hounding him over his weight...after he publicly announced he was going to lose weight and arranged weekly "weigh ins"), and calling 911 because he was accosted by "Marg, Warrior Princess". In addition to this court case, he's also involved in a $6M libel suit (as defendant).

He would probably make a terrific City Ombudsman and I cannot understand why he even wants to be mayor when he shows no interest in any of the things mayors do.

I really hope council just appoints a replacement for the next couple of years. We'll limp along...it can't be any worse than the last 2 years so why waste $7M on a by-election. Ford will probably run again (by-election or in 2014, depending on what is permitted), watching him run on a "poor little me, the left is out to get me!" platform is going to suck.

So would the judge. Unfortunately, there are no other options. If you are guilty - which Ford is - the only option available is being removed from your seat.

That, plus the "left" side of Toronto politics couldn't pick between two candidates, so it was a three way race with Ford being the only "right" option.

I seriously hope they get their shiat together and only put up one viable candidate. The last thing we need is for Ford to sneak back in because of a vote split again.
