I expect that he'll appeal, but I wonder if he won't just take it and walk away and coach HS football. He really doesn't seem to enjoy everything about being mayor that doesn't benefit him personally, and now that he can't get away with even that, he might prefer to just coach football and not be constantly be plowing through media scrums.

Toronto is one of the largest cities in North America and is home to 1/6 of all Canadians, so it warrants a newsflash .

Shadow Blasko: itsfullofstars: Newsflash? Really? I love Toronto and all. Great city to visit. But Newsflash?

Toronto is the 6th most populous metro area in North America. Kind of a big deal.

5th, actually. If it was Houston or Philadephia...is that newsflash worthy? Both of those cities are smaller.

Well ... bye.

CSB: I casually knew Paul Magder back in the day. He was the dude that fought for Sunday shopping laws to be changed by keeping his fur store open on Sundays and amassing tons of fines. I worked as concierge at the condo complex where he lived (maybe still lives -- King's Landing on Lakeshore and Spadina) a couple of decades ago. He collected classic cars, constantly drove them drunk, and parked them in the underground parking lot at a 30° angle across two spots. He was a bit of a dick. I was kinda surprised to hear his liver was still functioning.

He's notorious for skipping out on council meetings to go coach high school football.

Ford does some good work in the community. But this trial wasn't about $3,150. It's about him trying to change the rules to suit himself. Sometimes it's just cheaper to pay the fine.

Let's also add that he's a douche that came in on a platform vying to get rid of corruption. He is by no means, in the league of Cheney and Haliburton but he has held Toronto city hall in paralysis for far too long. I'm glad he's gone and hopefully the city can move forward as a world class city and not run like small town politics.

"Citing significant mitigating circumstances including "absolutely no issue of corruption or pecuniary gain" on the mayor's part, the judge's decision also left the door open for Ford to seek re-election in the future."

Of course Canadians are stereotypically nice aboot it.

Tamater: Glenford: Here's (Former) Mayor McCheese showing off his football skills

That made my office crack up for a good 10 minutes straight a few days ago.

There's another one where someone photoshopped Mario putting a banana peel behind him.

I can't find it, but here's another fail.

Well ain't that a kick. I had no idea. Here I thought the old drunk fart was still kicking the political tires, turns out there's a small clutch of Paul Magders passing the torch around.

I'm gonna name my kid Paul Magder and raise him to be a political pitbull so we can keep the Paul Magders of Toronto poking the badgers.

This is why I hate Mel. Not for anything about him in particular, not for his politics or the way he ran Toronto. No, I hate him because of Blaine. Every time a Bad Boy commercial comes on TV I want to punch that greasy fark's face. I don't even know why, it's not like I know the guy, he just has that kind of a face and his commercials and his annoying farking slogan make me all stabby.

Dude on CBC is saying that even if he doesn't appeal (or if the appeal fails), Ford isn't barred from running in the byelection for mayor, if council doesn't just appoint somebody. I wonder if they can just appoint him.

/Interesting to see this turning out so differently than when Ottawa's mayor faced criminal charges a few years back
//At one point, the wikipedia page on him (Larry O'Brien) had a section on his similarities to Lex Luthor
///As far as I know, he did not steal any cakes

It's hard to say. The last time this happened in Toronto, apparently they solved the problem by picking from a hat.

The nice thing is that he'd almost be guarunteed to lose an election at this point, so I welcome him running again. I just hope the legal side of things gets worked through quickly, having him sticking around for months while the appeal takes place will be annoying.

That, plus the "left" side of Toronto politics couldn't pick between two candidates, so it was a three way race with Ford being the only "right" option.

I seriously hope they get their shiat together and only put up one viable candidate. The last thing we need is for Ford to sneak back in because of a vote split again.

Yay! Making a political point over $3,000 is now going to cost Torontonians $7 million to elect a new Mayor!!

I get that Ford broke the rules but I think this is asinine.

He broke the law but had ample opportunity to correct it but refused out of pig-headed stupidity. He did this to himself.

I'm not claiming otherwise. I think that a modicum of perspective is appropriate though.

I don't think Ford is a good politician or even a good Mayor - but I'd be happier to have him reprimanded some other way as opposed to spending $7 million to elect somebody else.

Unfortunately, it's the only way he'll actually learn. He has had tons of formal reprimands and he hasn't learned from his mistakes at all, and in many cases, has just doubled-down. Anything short of removing him from office is just another thing he can ignore. You can't give him a worthwhile fine - the guy is loaded. You can't give him a strongly-worded reprimand because he doesn't care. You can't make him apologize because the one time he was forced to do that, literally the only thing he said was "sorry".

Leaving him in power just lets him continue his abuses and mistakes.

So would the judge. Unfortunately, there are no other options. If you are guilty - which Ford is - the only option available is being removed from your seat.
