People need to understand that 'sovereign debt' is not the same as, nor work the same as, personal debt.

A 'person' can be overwhelmed by debt if enough of their creditors come calling, which they do if they believe the person is unable to repay those debts.

A nation does not work that way. No one truly believes that the U.S will 'ever' be in a situation where they'd be unable to pay their debts.

A healthy economy is one with a healthy amount of debt. Do we have too much? Maybe. Should we try to rid ourselves of all of it? lol no.

This whole debate would be better suited if more people were properly educated in how things work on a national level before opening their mouths.

Since this is a representative democracy, it's in reality the voters who are spoiled kids for electing representatives who act like spoiled kids.

Obama offered up 4 trillion in spending cuts. All the GOP had to do was sign it. But no it didn't have their tax cuts for the rich so they walked.

Indeed. People look at the debt as a Big Number which looks very scary, but don't look at the GNP which is also a Big Number. But the debt as a percentage of GNP is not so scary when compared to a lot of other countries which produce less stuff and have fewer means to pay it back.

It's not so much that gold isn't real money, it's the implication that it's somehow realer money than any other easily traded commodity or what they derisively refer to as fiat money.

I used this term in a sarcastic, sneering sort of way in a conversation with my knee-jerk conservative brother-in-law at the last July 4th family get-together. (Pointless, I know.) He kept giving me strange looks and finally asked what Italian cars have to do with "fake American money."

That is complete, utter, and total bullshiat. Anybody who believes that has no understanding of history.

Start with the Soviet Union, 1998. The U.S. will end up in the situation. It might not be this decade, it might not even be this century (though I'd be willing to bet it will be), but it will definitely happen.
