Whats missing from these is the context. The 1950s/1960s US were convinced if we didn't keep testing, the commies would get ahead and pass us. By the 1970s testing was used as all kind of a bargaining chip back and forth during the cold war; various treaties were set up to "limit" or "stop" what was by now being called "strategic bombing." SALT, SALT II, START, I forget, every year or 2 there was another big deal treaty. Looking at the map, you strip all the context out and instead see a buncha bombs all being blown up.

Was completely unaware of the UK bomb in Nevada, that was kind of weird to see.

Was funny how many France had. Like they finally found a way to compete with the world without having it actually amount to needing to win at anything. Perfect.

In the end what did it buy us? Maybe 60 years of non world war? That was the thinking at the time. Mutually Assured Destruction meant as long as us and the commies kept armed to the teeth, the other would not be able to launch an attack. It was as widely mocked as ridiculous then as it was also considered essential. Just depended what side of the peacenik fence you were on.

/Seriously though, even though nobody wanted nuclear war, it is kinda scary to think what would have happened if only one major power possessed the bomb. Larger scale proxy wars, maybe even direct conflict, invasion, etc

Just finished a book called The Day We Bombed Utah. It's dated, obviously, but if even 1/2 true... good god- our government poisoned its own people. IN PLAIN SIGHT.

While I'm sure there are people out there who suffered various ill effects from nuclear testing and subsequent fallout, I highly doubt that the intent was to poison the American people.

/Though the government should have been more careful, and should have owned up and tried to to help those affected in any way they can

Here's the optimistic thing, you know how many of those were used in actual warfare? Two. Exactly Two. We've got all this destructive power and the number of times we've KNOWINGLY attacked someone with nuclear warheads is exactly two. Nuclear tests were basically dick waving, but nobody pushed the button.
To this day, the fact that humanity hasn't nuked the crap out of itself is amazing, considering how close we've come.

Yes there have been regional conflicts and 1M/year is tragic, but when war is contained then you don't end up with mass starvation, imprisonments, disease and deprivation across entire theaters, continents, and disruptions of the global food chain. So, yeah, imagine if that trend had just continued.

And what as that decline bout us? Gross overpopulization. Maybe it's time to either a] think out the herd or b] admit not everyone can have a bunch of shiat and share resources/food more. Which we have a natural ability to make surplus of, but are hindered by various situations..

I never stated that the overt intention was to poison the American people, but if you read the book and do some research, you'll see that through pure maniacal ignorance, that's EXACTLY what happened.

Growing up in the 80s, I always heard that 10 nukes could destroy the planet. Watching that, I'd say they were off by a few hundred percent...
