If you're going to go with that stupid convention, subby, at least get it right -- dog's brother and sister, not son and daughter. But the headline is dumb regardless.

This happens several times a year, people dying trying to save a dog that's fallen into water. Meanwhile the dog swims out of the water just fine.

Remember people, your dog can swim better than you can, and will also retain his body heat in cold water longer than you will.
If the dog can't get out on his own, you -really- have no business going in there. (In ground pools excepted)

Came here to say it's not worth your life and puppy can swim better than you can, but many people have been able to point this out before I did.

Of course, this is FARK. Stupidity and tunnel vision are celebrated as bootstrappy, here. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.

Saturday afternoon when the dog chased after a thrown stick and got pulled into the ocean by eight to ten foot waves

Did the owner troll the dog by waiting for the wave wash to recede and throw the stick on the wet sand directly where the next wave would crash?

I hate to say they deserved it but why in the fark would you think you're going to win against 8-10ft waves? And at a Northern California beach at that... (googles).. Yep.. Water temp a frigid 56F.. Which means it's "HOLY fark IT"S COLD" only a foot or two below the surface.

Keep your dog on a farking leash unless you're in a fenced in area. I don't care how well trained it is there are too many things that can kill it if you let it run around out of control.

I run a sunset cruise on the coast near San Fran. When the weather turns cold this time of year, most of my business comes from no-kill shelters. They load the boat up with cats and dogs in cages. I take them out to sea and then they throw them overboard. There's about a .001% chance that any of them make it back to shore, but it's a chance, so they get to keep their no-kill status.

Sometimes we have a few beers and then race the boat through swimming packs of drowning animals. It's like driving a blender. More fun and cheaper than gassing them all I suppose.

And the kid made it out but went back in for the dad.

So, while the dog started the chain of events, everyone who died actually went in for a person or two.

Nice assumption. I was more indicating toward a "variety is the spice of life"-esque angle, but skew it how you will - proves my original point.

I, too, stand up to the tyranny of dog owners and boldly proclaim that it's not worth risking one's own life to save a dog!

Seriously though, what strawman are we all attacking here? Is there someone on the planet who actually thinks, on full reflection, that this is a worthwhile risk? I'm sure this family did not expect to be in danger of dying when they first went in after the dog.

I'd wager dying wasn't their intent. Would you abandon your pet if there was a 10% chance of death? 1%?

Gunny Highway: People who refer to their dogs as "kids" really bother me.

I used to think of my cats as "kids with fur," then I had real kids and I realized how stupid and self-deluded I was.

People who forgo having children and use pets, which don't actually love you and are incapable of having human emotion, as mortar to fill the hole in their empty lives are sad. Anyone who says otherwise is shouting into the mirror.
