brandent: My simple plan for the Post Office.

1. Jack up bulk rates. There's no need in 2012 for the US Government to be running an advertising firm. This will reduce volume of mail dramatically (and also revenue).
2. Deliver 3 days per week to residences on a blue/gold route. i.e. blue=M,W,F and gold=T,Th,Sat.
3. Any business wanting 5 day per week service pays a nominal monthly fee.
4. Then close most of the post processing centers and post offices as most of the volume would be gone. Keep at least a main branch open for other services in each city.
5. Set rates appropriately on First Class to meet the new funding requirement (that might be $2/letter).
6. Encourage use of kiosk postal centers (there's one in the drug store near my house).

Or we could simply remove the rule where the post office has to put away 70 years of pensions money in an account that can't be touched and doesn't gather interest for every person they higher and they be back in the black instantly. After all the rule was solely created for the post office to try and bankrupt it. Then no other changes have to be made.

It always kills me when people biatch about the service provided by the post office. For $.45 I can have a piece of mail make it anywhere in the US in about 3 days, sometimes less. Yeah that's some shiatty ass service there.

The USPS is actually pretty good.

I live in Canada, about 200 miles north of Seattle. A friend sold something on eBay to a guy in Florida. Mailed it in the morning here, on an island off the coast of Canada.

It was delivered the next day. In Florida.

We still can't figure how that worked. Perhaps that $5 billion they lost was spent on developing a working matter transporter.
