I blame the work habits of Americans and lack of balance in life. It has come to a point where every year we are expected to work harder than the year previous. I would venture to say that there is no such thing as a typical 9-5 job any longer. You throw outrageous commute times in most major cities because affording a half-way decent family home in the city is unaffordable, you end up with people that really are not able to exercise. If I don't have work, I am probably at a networking event, bettering my career, or entertaining clients on a week day. That means at the EARLIEST I am getting home around 9. Am I going to go and work out after? No. I am exhausted. Am I really going to wake up at 5am to go work out, then take a shower and get dressed? Fark no, I wouldn't be able to function during the day, I would have to go to bed RIGHT when I got home!

There is no balance to life anymore. I would LOVE getting home at 5 so I could go work out and cook.

Food makers and marketers have learned how to hack the palette and minds of people for market advantage. A side affect is growing waistlines. Then some folks blame the population as a whole for not having the willpower to resist the paid consultants, chefs, psychologists, chemists, billions in non-stop marketing, and best in class ease of availability.

Frederick: The average weight of WWII soldiers was 150 lbs.

The average soldier today is 2.5" taller than the average WWII soldier, too. The Great Depression was a biatch.
