There was s point that Clinton said fark it and shut down the Government.

Obama needs to do that here. We have ALREADY done the cuts. Now the bill had to be paid.

What's all this?

Lindsey Graham wants to violate Grover Norquist now?

Scandalous!

No?

Oh, just his stupid pledge?

You sure about that? A'ight.

The GOP got a shiat ton of proposed cuts in their infamous "we got 99% of what we wanted" days.

Of course that was before they decided that backing out of the group of six discussions at the 11th hour in order to force sequestration would be a savvy political move. I can almost see sort of what they were getting at there, of course. They got most of what they wanted but they wanted more. They were unreasonably optimistic about their chances at the WH this time around and they thought that they could pin their own intransigence and obstructionism on Obama through their media proxies. They thought they could retake the executive branch and re-write the thing even more in their favor.

They were wrong, of course.

Grover Norquist needs to go away now.

The problem is that the Republicans can eek out more cuts and Obama risk of being labels uncompromising.

He needs to let it expire... And then that will force the republicans to vote against reinstating social security, Medicare and vital infrastructure.

Grover Norquist, like Mitt Romney, is a convenient punching bag at the moment. In the end, not much is changing in the Republican Party, they are just superficially cleaning house. The house is still covered in turds.

I've never really heard a good argument why this hasn't already happened.

Force the GOP to openly show their hand by risking all their remaining political capital on unpopular policies like gutting needed social services while grandstanding for tax cuts, capital gains cuts, inheritance tax shenanigans and the like and maybe just maybe a few more people will start to see through their lies.

Worth a shot.

/I'mma cautiously optimistic by nature.

As a conservative it appals me to see Republicans go to that.

1. We all paid into those programs our entire working lives, and so did our employers - those are not exactly "entitlements" like traditional welfare.
2. The baby boom will age out, and SS should readjust along with it.

Medicare, eh, we may need to raise the tax there. It's only 1.45%, another point not bankrupt anybldy and would increase funding by 60%. Problem solved.

If we want to tax the rich, maybe reinstate SS on ALL income over $1 million, no exceptions.

2012-11-25 06:50:52 PM
I'm confused, based on the election the Republicans (who lost everywhere) have decided that the best course of action is to double down and blame Grover for their problems? Obama is holding all of the cards here. All the cards. He can sit back until Jan 1st and when everything expires, whip out his thundercock of truth and cockslap Boehner et. al.

One of the oldest military axioms is "Never reinforce failure." The republican leadership, if they had the stones should be waiting out the clock until Jan 1st as well. At least they'd have a chance of being invited to the table.

Exactly. Come up with a tax cut worded so it just benefits the middle class, and let the GOP try and stop THAT. Either it passes (because we all know how much they love tax cuts), or they'll have hell to pay come re-election time when the Democrats can remind everyone that the Republicans blocked tax cuts because they only benefit the 99%

At this point, the Republicans can't obstruct any longer. There's no negotiating to be done, because they still aren't making a good faith effort to compromise.

Good, their resolve is starting to crumble.

2012-11-25 06:53:58 PM
Actually, Obama needs to make it clear that if the repubs don't accede to returning tax rates on the wealthy back to Clinton levels prior to January 1st, after we fall off the fiscal cliff and are negotiating new taxes he's going to recommend 50% tax rates on income over $250K. Oh, you don't like that? OK then, 60%.

"I am altering the deal. Pray I do not alter it further."

Unfortunately, compromise demands vision. The GOP lacks any sort of vision which is why most of them signed that idiotic pledge in the first place. They have also spent the last 4 years decrying compromise, so they know that if they take a compromise, even one in their favor back to their constituents they are going to get pissed all over by people like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. People with absolutely nothing on the line.

I was with you until this statement. SS caps out at $110,100. Not $1 million. And you don't need to remove the cap at all - just raise it a few bucks.

I agree, also the GOP has this thing about throwing out all sorts of idiotic percentages. I think that is their evil plan. They kn0w that 108% of Americans suck at fractions. Overwhelm the voting populace with funny numbers and proceed to victory.

Step 1. Cut Social Security and Medicare and raise taxes on the wealthy.

Step 2. Cut taxes on the wealthy.

It seems that too many Republicans, and some others, are too eager to keep the tax rates where they are but limit deductions for the wealthy. It's almost as if they've already figured out a way around the limiting of deductions.

How about this? Walmart has a grocery store built in now right? How about instead of food stamps, Walmart sells food to their employees on credit. They could work there and feed their families all they wanted! What's the term for that again?
