Anybody who says one thing is the cause of you being a fatass isn't somebody saying worth hearing. The human body is more complex than that. There's not some magical new protein in wheat making you fat, you're just eating to much and exercising too little.

Well, on one hand, the obese epidemic DID start toward the early 80's.

On the other hand, Aliens; sppaaaaaaace

Yeah ok, one guy says wheat is terrible. So therefore I believe it. After all he must have all the answers and has to be perfectly credible.

What a stupid article. Great ad for his book, though.

Vodka Zombie: Sounds like someone is creating yet another fad diet.

Actually, it's been around for a while.
Paland diet. Eat meat, fruit, nuts, veggies (and tubers). Avoid processed foods (so no juice either), sugar, grains, legumes and dairy. Also new potatoes cause they're useless.

Has nothing to do with low carbs though on the surface it may look like it (berries, sweet potatoes are regularly consumed). Just more about the glycemic loads of the food and eating "clean". Just build your meals around the concept of pick a protein, add a dark green vegetable and then fill out the plate with other veggies.

Also, the book "Wheat Belly" is supposed to be a very interesting read.

I cut grains out of my diet two years ago. As a result, my psoriasis cleared up and my sleep apnea went away. My wife also had some pretty brutal bouts with IBS, which have disappeared.

I wonder what the problem could have been...

And this is the perfect place to pimp my wife's blog... She recently posted a full Thanksgiving menu that was grain and dairy-free. 'Twas amazing. As a matter of fact, she's cooking up another batch of Pumpkin Raisin Pudding.

I don't know about the gilad business.

I do know that when I stopped eating the standard American intake of 300-400g of carbohydrates a day and went down to 20, I lost a massive amount of weight and started feeling fantastic. That strategy has worked for literally everyone I know who has tried to lose weight.

This would also explain the global obesity epidemic. As fast food jumped the borders by corporate greed and government protection, people in those countries began to get wider. I'd like to see graph comparing he spread of fast food and rate of obesity spread.

Granted there are more and more GMO's in our food (Thanks, Monsanto) but have you heard of being 'Skinny Fat?' Not everyone who is fat is unhealthy.

This. Unathletic people don't need a high carb diet. I eat a shiatload of carbs, but I use them in training so they don't end up around my belly.

I haven't read the blog, but I did read the book Wheat Belly last July, and since then have lost 40+ pounds by cutting wheat products out of my diet. I had a checkup a couple of weeks ago and my doctor was astounded at my weight loss and improvements to my blood chemistry: HDL up from 51 to 78 and triglycerides down from nearly 400 to 80. Fasting blood sugar 88. I don't do any calorie counting or intake restriction, either, though I did cut way back on other grains and starchy veggies.

wait, opiates stimulate appetite, now?

the gliadin protein that is an opiate. This thing binds into the opiate receptors in your brain and in most people stimulates appetite, such that we consume 440 more calories per day, 365 days per year

It may be this new protein or not, but bread has been known to be "empty calories" for a long time.

The answer is the same as it was before. More vegetables, less bread sugar and fats. Sometimes I think people are just updating old ideas with new names.

I just had bangers and (sweet potato) mash, with a side of spinach and carrots!

However, for the other 15% of my meal today... I will have a rocky road sundae :-)

The guy does sounds like he needs to boost book sales but there is probably some truth to what he's saying. I also do not trust the mega food companies. I'm going to be really upset if the 'crap' he's talking about is in standard flour. I make my own bread 9 times out of 10 to avoid overly processed bread. Not a crazy hipster, I just prefer home baked bread when I can find the time. I literally can taste plastic in some of the store brands.

I also cut the crap out of my diet and seen huge improvements in my overall health. Blood pressure went back to normal and skin cleared up. The only processed food I do buy is greek yogurt.

Doc sounds like an anti-GMO luddite. I'm a huge fan of reductionism but attributing the obesity crisis to an increase in a single wheat protein is . . . just weird.

Another reminder of the difference between MDs and scientists....

Gliadin is one of the proteins that make up gluten, dumass.

While there's some compelling evidence that wheat or wheat products have become more antigenic in the last 60-70 years, whackjobs like the guy in the TFA don't do much to help clarify the issue.

/Not on the anti-GF bandwagon. Half of my family (four generations) have to eat GF or we all pay the price.

Unless you mill your own flour or distilled your own water, then no, Greek yogurt isn't the only "processed" food you buy.

Besides the fact that it's seemingly Asian and is meant to be "read" right to left, the woman didn't change enough.
There's no long, luscious blonde hair; a larger smile; a bright, colorful bikini that looks expensive; and most of all she's missing the handsome gentleman who accepted her after she used this product.

How can I believe her life changed with this image?

That is intake restriction: Eliminating a major source of calories as a diet option makes it harder to consume calories. It's said by some to be the main reason Atkins works.

The paleo diet is a fine concept, but I find it annoying that the hardcore people cut out legumes. I don't know of any self-respecting primate that wouldn't eat a legume, and humans have been cooking their food for so long that the digestibility of any particular species eaten raw shouldn't be an issue.
