Porn stars more positive, spiritually healthier than other women

Spirituality healthy? Is that why the say "Oh God" a lot?

The actresses, all of whom had been paid to work on at least one X-rated movie, ranged in age from 18 to 50, with an average career in the industry of 3.5 years. More than one-third were either married or in a serious relationship, and 44% were single.

Those statistics sound totally legit and not pulled out of the researchers' asses. Let's say "more than 1/3" is 35%. So, 35% in a serious relationship + 44% single = 79%. What is the status of the other 21%? They're not in a serious relationship or single... maybe they're in a casual polyamorous harem?

Perhaps they didn't report on their marital status. "N/A" does happen in research.

Abstract for the study.

Of course the website commenters, including people claiming to be associated with a university, are making ad hominem and poisoning the well attacks even though they make no claim to having looked at the study or assessed the data on their own.

Have you actually examined the paper and the research?

Both places I've seen this article up, I've been very amused by the comments.

People sure do have a lot invested in the idea that women in porn are secretly miserable.

2012-11-25 03:30:39 PM
This is just the industry trying to dispel some stereotypes about people who do porn for a living. While well meaning the numbers do seem a little self serving and arbitrary. While there may be a lot of happy and well adjusted in the industry the stereotypes are not made up out of whole cloth. That noted, as the objections of the prudish, religious zealots and hardcore anti-porn feminists lessen and general societal acceptance of porn as just another aspect of life increases the old stereotypes about sex trader workers will also diminish.

2012-11-25 03:31:54 PM
I wonder if there is a typo in the abstract. That "ever tried 10 different types of drugs" doesn't make syntactic sense. Perhaps they mean "never" ?

Alright. Time to put on my academic credentials and see if I can access the actual article....

Any chance that good-looking women both have higher self-esteem and are more likely to be selected as porn stars?

2012-11-25 03:35:57 PM
Well, all those cam girls do seem to have great personalities. Well, most of them do.

It's the big fake tits that give em the confidence.

I don't think I've ever met a woman who didn't have obvious self esteem issues. Sure, lots of men do too, but we mostly hide ours and try and forget about them. Women seem to wear their issues out in the open and bring them up whenever they get a chance.

Why the heck are you women so hard on yourselves? That's what men are for.

Somacandra: Have you actually examined the paper and the research?

Nope. Just saying "the average woman has less self esteem than a porn star" conclusion coming as it does from an industry organ seems suspect.

This may be true but it would be very difficult to prove empirically with anything resembling definitive numbers as our current model of tricorders can't actually measure esteem with any accuracy.

Perhaps the next generation of tricorders will have more success.

And yes, I'm sure that's THE "Sharon Mitchell," that is to say, Dr. Sharon Mitchell (NSFW ads), with her PhD from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.

This study proves that attention whores with daddy issues can eventually be worshiped so much that they completely internalize the bullshiat their admirers shower them with. They should also study women who marry older men who shower them with everything they want.

/Nothing against them, though. Everyone finds their niche, more power to 'em, no illusions that mine is any better.

Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Sexual hangups cause nothing but trouble.

It all probably comes down to which ones do it from a mostly voluntary perspective, as opposed to sucked into the life and feeling trapped like a crack-addicted hooker.

Tell you what...I'll go find 100 women of various backgrounds, ethnicities and body types. I'll fark 50 of them off camera, 50 on and post the scenes. We can then interview the women and get an understanding of their emotional/mental state. Let's say we get a few other farkers to do the same and compile the data. Will that be sufficient?

My self esteem is great. I think people are human and sometimes feel insecure, but it's definitely not the norm for me. I also don't place my self worth in my looks or other people, because the quality of both of those wax and wane with time.

I do say there is a weird obsession with people needing to believe women are miserable, especially in porn. Heaven forbid a woman not care enough what society thinks and do something she loves and is good at!

Why do people care so much about what other people do, and why?

You try feeling good about yourself when you had too much coke off your costar's ass and can't get it up, or climax too early and get chewed out by the director for thirty minutes and end up blacklisted from the company, after you already sucked them off to get the job in the first place.

At least women only have to worry about something going horribly wrong on set once a month, for everything else there's lube.

There is only one question: Have you actually looked at the study and its methods? Any moron can just claim "the sample size is too small"--people on Fark do that all time to discredit something they don't happen to like. Which sample size are you talking about? Why is it too small and what would be an adequate size?

Why is it too small and what would be an adequate size and why? Can you tell me why they chose this method and sample size? Did they anticipate any objections or account for sample size bias within the study itself? You can't actually tell me any of these things, can you?

Smart people do too. And the reason it's done "all the time" (lol) is because "the sample size is too small". No scientist serious about their work would look at that study as anything more than an opportunity to do a better one if they had the time.
