It's not the zoning that's the problem - it's labeling public urinators and sexually active teenagers 'sex offenders"

Well, since so many crimes actually count as sexual offenses, yeah... a lot of reasonable people just might. God forbid an 18 year old kid sleeps with his 17 year old girlfriend. I hope you never get caught pissing behind a dumpster on a walk home from the bar. In some places, that thar be a sexual offense. So is streaking at a football game, consensual sex between two teenagers, sodomy and visiting a prostitute. So, not really all sex offenders are out to rape children.

In order for justice to exist in our system, even the pre-convicted guilty deserve the best defense possible. Not to mention the accused innocent.

This seems more like the people who build homes near existing airport runways then expect air traffic to change so their new homes will not be bothered by the noise of aircraft takeoffs and landings.

FTA: Milliard read from a list of sex offenses eight of his clients have been charged with in court cases since 2010, including child rape, possession of child pornography, and sexual assault on children under 12 and under 14.

To that, I say fark them.

Charged, not convicted.

If you're more interested in convictions than justice, then yeah, every defense lawyer is a scumbag who should be strung up.

Fortunately, a few people in this country still thinj Justice should be based on something a little more conclusive than "but the TV said he was guilty".

One who actually cares about making surethe innocent don't go to jail justice is carried out; as opposed to the rest of your scum-sucking profession who only care about winning, regardless of whether they let a lowlife out to walk the streets. cause an innocent person to be executed.

That didn't take long at all to fix it for the other side of the coin.

Yeah, MR Z, this is your attorney Mr. Millard's office... we'll have to reschedule your appointment at our other office if that's ok. Thanks! See you then.

Meanwhile...

Yes Ms. Keriakos... we don't want to send our children to your day care center. Unfortunate that you chose to open where you did, you seem like a nice lady. It seems like there're way too many news stories about your place. We're going to send our children somewhere.... less controversial. "

It's the zoning, too. There was a town in Georgia that wrote an ordinance which effectively prevented any sex offenders from living anywhere except under a bridge going out of town. I'm all for keeping the children safe, but at some point we're going to have to realize these laws violate the eighth amendment.

I realize playing devil's advocate for child molesters is an unpopular position, which is why these laws exist in the first place. However, it's still a discussion that needs to take place.

Feel like discussing why spouse abusers aren't forced onto a public registry? How 'bout assailants & batterers? Or gang members?

It's interesting how bashing a woman's face in for bein' lippy over the course of a relationship doesn't merit similar "zoning."

Either 'company' could move to somewhere else, but let's see how this plays out.

I repeat: how bout one of those handy maps to point out the guys that like to slap their wife/girlfriend around a little? How bout a handy map that lets us know where those gangsters live? Remember that guys who beat the crap out of someone for showing up to a game in the wrong team's jersey? I guess it's okay to live next to them and not know it. That's not scary. Not even kind of.

nyseattitude: These people are convicted of sensationalist crime, not accused, and they have no place in a rural society. They earned it, they ARE NOT the victim here.

If the crime is bad enough to warrant a lifetime listing on the registry, it's probably bad enough to warrant life in prison.

If someone has a known history of kidnapping and molesting children, with a high likelyhood they will repeat the crime again after they're released, it's probably a good idea to keep them locked up.

If someone posts an unmarked NSFW link on an internet forum, but otherwise has a clean record, they're not likely to be much of a threat to society.

But under the current laws, both the guy who kidnapped children and the guy who pasted the wrong link get the exact same punishment, and the exact same vilification by society.

poe_zlaw: Yeah-- screw that perv loving attorney. I wonder how many victims of his clients he has blamed knowing god damned good and well his client is guilty.

I'm sure he loves their money more, but I'm going to say this: We NEED defense attorneys. Heck, I support having 100% public defender coverage, not means tested, because right now so much as accusing somebody of a serious crime can trigger a 'fine' of thousands of dollars in attorney fees. Said office should be funded no less than the prosecutor's office.

I am against the death penalty for almost anyone but sex offenders./i>

Are you against the due process of law? Personally, I'm pretty death-happy, but I at least want a proper trial first, and hate them as much as you like, if you're ever accused of a crime I'm sure you'd want a good defender. Until we get rid of adversary based trials, at least.

Somewhere between 10-30% of reported rapes turn out to have been false accusations(remember the Duke Lacrosse team?). I remember a case where a psychologist with a huge grudge against fathers fabricated memories in her patients that they were raped/abused by their fathers. Turns out you can do that with young kids. Messed up the kids, ruined the father's lives. At least one committed suicide.

Give them the best defense attorney. THEN, once the trial is complete and they've been found guilty, then you can hang them off the yardarm.

It's not like anyone can be falsely accused of witchcr- I mean pedastry. Clearly preventing people accused of sensationalist crimes from recieving legal advice is a good idea. Nothing could possibly be wrong with that.

So, that article MUST be inclusive of all of his clients. I see it say 8 clients and include 3 or 4 offenses. Unless they all did the same things, which is entirely possible, then it isn't really the people I'm "defending". But, you wouldn't you be able to concede that the 4 offenses may not actually cover everyone that he represents and that the author of the article isn't sharing all of the information with the reader? I mean, it's not like news ever shows bias or omits facts.... right?

JESUS H FARKING CHRIST THIS THIS THIS.

Goddamn I have so many problems with "sex offender" registries. Take a leak in the bushes and get busted? Oh you're a sex offender. 18 year old bangs his 16 year old girlfriend? Oh you're a sex offender. I hate hate HATE this shiat. There is zero goddamn common sense in this area. It's black and white- provided the "perp" isn't female, then no one seems to give a shiat unless it's a teacher.

Tenatra: Somaticasual: Devious, but it is brilliantly executed admittedly.

I don't find it too brilliant. If he has to turn away clients because of her, could he get her on damages? She seems to be walking on egg shells by putting a daycare in the same building as a lawyer to spite the lawyer, this littlest slip up and he can have pictures and get the parents of children to take pursue a case with him. I wonder what noise restrictions are in place by the landlords, kids get too loud and he can get her kicked out. It doesn't take much, especially if you get the other tenants together and all threaten to leave if so and so isn't removed.

On top of that this is a form of domestic abuse. (I think it was social abuse or that with emotional abuse?) After I had a BS charge filed against me I had to take a DV course. One of the things I learned was that it was a form of abuse for me to go to areas she would go around the times she would go. Grocery store, movies, etc. Anything knowingly done to interfere with her daily life would be grounds for charges.

Oh it's a harassment suit waiting to happen, especially now that it's a news story. But it's practically brilliant when compared to keying someone's car, sleeping with their friends to get revenge, or the old hand-in-a-thing-of-hot-water-while-sleeping prank. I imagine the woman would be a supervillian if she had the resources..

Am sorry to hear of your DV charge - Assuming you're telling the whole truth on that one, it really is a system ripe for abuse by a vengeful ex, and especially slanted against the man having virtually any social or legal recourse. No man should have to endure that kind of BS, and partners need to realize how much that can destroy someone else's career/etc before saying something in anger or malice..

It's not interesting - that's how our legal system is supposed to work. You serve your punishment, and then you're done. Only sex-offenders get extra punishment after they've served their sentence.

Untrue. Other felons also get extra punishment, in the sense of voter disenfranchisement, revocation of their right to bear arms, increased likelihood of conviction of further crime, and increased punishment for any further crime.
