(Fox News)   In Florida it's illegal to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb or attempt to molest, harass, or disturb a manatee. So having your picture taken while riding one is definitely frowned upon and can result in interaction with law enforcement   (foxnews.com) divider line 14

PreMortem: Howie Spankowitz: Her punishment should be that a giant blubbery manatee gets to come into her house and ride her around for a day, just jumping on her at random.

What a dumbass. I can't f*cking stand people like her. Do you really think that animal wanted to be your f*cking entertainment for the day, you clueless cow? Next time you wonder why some sign exists like "Don't Put Tongue in Electrical Socket," you will know it's because of this insufferable idiot.

Let's see.... woman ignorant of the law does harmless thing to a stupid animal and gets arrested at work and will have to spend untold $ to deal with it. Sounds fair.

Give me your address, next time I'm down there I'll pull one out of the water and eviscerate it on your doorstep. Then you can have something to be upset about.

Apparently, the bar for being "upset" for you is people you don't know posting on the internet.

It's not harmless and how clueless do you have to be to not know that harassing a wild animal isn't the right thing to do? Her arrest is completely fair and I hope it discourages other "hold my beer and look at me" idiots who can't simply enjoy nature without destroying it.

Tell you what, eviscerate yourself in the comfort of your own home and we'll call it even.

Manatees seem pretty awesome. They like to eat sea weed and chill and shiat. They're like the stoners of the sea.

If one swam up to me, I'd have a hard time keeping myself from petting it.

dogdaze: My mom's a tour guide at parks here in Fla. She told me of one new park opened here in Fla and the rangers allowed people to swim with the manatees but under certain conditions so as not to harm the creatures (e.g. no touching, no fins). She said that a good 10-20% of those allowed in the water were asked to leave because they simply could not follow easy to understand rules.

Manatees are playful... they will come up to you, rub up against you, roll over for you to rub their belly etc. It's tough not to reciprocate their longing for attention.

Exactly... I've gone swimming in some of the freshwater springs, and a manatee came up to me, grabbed my hand (I had an underwater point and shoot, taking pics of them, without flash) and wanted me to pet it so much it pulled on me until I did.

We had rules on the trips I went on - You don't approach them. If they approach you, it's ok to pet it gently, but if it moves away at all, stop immediately. Don't chase them, don't harass them, and do NOT go into the protected zones, or near any babies.

I've never been as choked up as I was snorkeling with manatees. They are gentle little stoners, like someone said above... and they're chopped up by props, hooks, and other implements of destruction.

Galileo's Daughter: But you can annoy, molest, harass, or disturb lionfish. That's okay, right?

They aren't indigenous and they're destroying reef ecosystems.
