(Fox News)   In Florida it's illegal to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb or attempt to molest, harass, or disturb a manatee. So having your picture taken while riding one is definitely frowned upon and can result in interaction with law enforcement   (foxnews.com) divider line 81

PreMortem: Give me your address, next time I'm down there I'll pull one out of the water and eviscerate it on your doorstep.

Uh, let's be honest here, fella. If that's the provocation-to-rage ratio you're working at, you're pretty much leaving eviscerated corpses on people's doorsteps on a regular basis anyway, aren't you?

That said, I agree with you in principle. When annoyance is outlawed, only outlaws will be... me.

I'm just not seeing what the big deal is. It didn't attack her, and it's not like she held it down and stabbed it. It's a ton plus of meat and survival instinct, not a Ming vase, it'll be okay.

Maybe it's like feeding the bears at Yosemite.

It trains them to hang around humans, and consequently somebody's gonna get hurt.

That site may be a spoof, but there is a legitimate argument to saving endangered species by creating demand for them as food. Create the demand and Manatee Farms could become feasible business propositions, leading to the breeding of more Manatees and an increase in their numbers.

Yeah, that's a good point. I was just more surprised at the attitude that even coming into contact with the animal was "destroying" it. Fine her and lecture her about being smashed/drowned by the animal, but throwing her in jail and treating her like a Captain Planet villain seems excessive.

In FloridaAnywhere in the United States it's illegal to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb or attempt to molest, harass, or disturb a manatee listed endangered animal.

This goes for riding sea turtles as well. She'll end up getting fined a grand at most and let loose.

They like power plants. Just don't carry a power plant around with you and all will be well.

They aren't indigenous and they're destroying reef ecosystems.

Yes, I know. It's a serious problem in Florida.

What a dumbass. I can't f*cking stand people like her. Do you really think that animal wanted to be your f*cking entertainment for the day, you clueless cow? Next time you wonder why some sign exists like "Don't Put Tongue in Electrical Socket," you will know it's because of this insufferable idiot.

dogdaze: My mom's a tour guide at parks here in Fla. She told me of one new park opened here in Fla and the rangers allowed people to swim with the manatees but under certain conditions so as not to harm the creatures (e.g. no touching, no fins). She said that a good 10-20% of those allowed in the water were asked to leave because they simply could not follow easy to understand rules.

Exactly... I've gone swimming in some of the freshwater springs, and a manatee came up to me, grabbed my hand (I had an underwater point and shoot, taking pics of them, without flash) and wanted me to pet it so much it pulled on me until I did.

We had rules on the trips I went on - You don't approach them. If they approach you, it's ok to pet it gently, but if it moves away at all, stop immediately. Don't chase them, don't harass them, and do NOT go into the protected zones, or near any babies.

I've never been as choked up as I was snorkeling with manatees. They are gentle little stoners, like someone said above... and they're chopped up by props, hooks, and other implements of destruction.

Authorities spent 2 months on this crap? C'mon, the animal wasn't hurt in any way. Manatees are quite curious and I remember them watching us while fishing and boating.

If anything, if the manatee really didn't enjoy the experience, it'd learn to stay away from humans in the future.

/then again, when I was growing up in FL, we'd beat the crap out of any alligator up on the shoreline. Usually we'd chuck coconuts, rocks, and cinder blocks at them whilst the older kids would use baseball bats and 2x4s.
//Now this is considered cruel and Fish & Wildlife will instead KILL alligators which get to close to humans.
