If you are no longer casting actors of the same race, using the same locations, and you've altered massive elements of the story and characters so that they no longer represent the same themes...
Why did you bother buying a license to produce that story?

Um... yo, random blogger dude. It's not the race changes or even the setting change that is going to cause this movie to suck. There's no element of the story that references race, it's not like the Airbender movie where a pallete swap actually alters the meaning of something. Modern cities (i.e. cities in the last century or so) have always been pretty poly-racial to begin with, economic distinctions being more important.

It's that everything from the long development cycle to the various actors and directors suggested scream "this movie will suck".

//Also the fact that the Cold War has been over for more than two decades now is gonna deprive it of some vital context.

PacManDreaming: Please, please, pleeeeeease don't screw up Akira.

It's being set in Manhattan man. The die was cast as soon as that decision was made.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: I don't mean to nitpick, but that should be spelled "KAAAAAAAANEEEEEEEEEDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA".

TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'd swear, if they had stopped shouting each other name at each other, they might have been able to get a kill in.

As it were, I'm glad this movie got shiatcanned. Akira is very much a Japanese story that requires a Japanese cast. To do anything else would be like putting Doctor Who in America or Les Miserable in Mexico.
