It's farking funny. I love that video.. when they're dancing through that blown white stuff and the girls are kind of cowering from it, and it's flying in his mouth while he sings.

I did some research (googled) and found that the song is basically a parody anyhow, of a type of young woman in Korea who skimps on essentials so they can spend their money looking affluent.

It's clear that was a first take. Watch the one on the left, she's clearly baffled by what the hell is happening and somewhat pissed off.

The thing that you get from the video is that people are having fun. The choreography doesn't look like they hired Paula Abdul to do it which would suck all the life out of it, but that yeah, someone just got shown the moves on the day, and shiat got thrown in.

Oh, and the redhead girl in the hotpants. Yeah...

Exactly. "Gangham Style" is fun. Psy's clearly having a blast, and not taking himself too seriously. Compare that to a barely-pubescent Canadian kid rapping quite seriously about puppy love. (Also, can we blame Ludacris for inspiring Patrice Wilson to be all creepy in "Friday" and "Thanksgiving?" Because I kinda want to.) This is a justified viewership win, for once.

I don't get all this 'it's a fun video' nonsense.

Look at this shot - clearly a homage to Rodan's Thinker and reflective of the philosophy Nietzche pronounced, which spoke of Man vs Superman and Looking into The Abyss of an Empty Seoul.

I'm somewhat convinced, watching some of her other stuff, is that a decent amount of why she looks good to us is the Western makeup, especially accentuating her eyes. She doesn't look as good to me without the black around her eyes. Her actual music is incredibly inane, even by American pop standards.

Plus the song so damn addictive, even when you don't know what Psy is saying. I did go look up translations, and it's more appealing once you have an idea what he's saying.

I think PSY is awesome and a refreshing change from the self-important dbags who infest the American pop scene.

Korean pop as a whole seems a lot more fun and interesting than the crap we get in the States.
I mean, this one song by Brown Eyed Girls is better than Niki Minaj's entire career.

And this song by UV is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

And they also seem interested in making videos like we used to in the 80s and 90s - strange weird videos. This one by Narsha plays like an old Kate Bush video. Bonus points for Freddy Krueger back up dancers.

And my current favorite.

Here's something that strikes me about what the K-Pop people are getting that came from Europop - you need some English words to work abroad. Not many, just enough that people can occassionally join in with. The words also need to be catchy like "hey... sexy lady".

Also, yes, I can fap to that.

"Macarena" was released in 1995. Here we are, almost twenty years later, still talking about it. To me, that suggests that the "Macarena" is not dead. Maybe we'll still be talking about "Gangnam Style" in a couple of decades, too.

Indeed. I went to a science-fair-thingy for 9-14 year olds (FIRST Lego League) and while the judges were deciding the results "Macarena" came on the loudspeakers and most of the kids were doing it. Its not gone by a long shot.

If they play Gangnam Style at the state championship one of my team members is going to blow a fuse...she was born in Gangnam and gets pissed when people sing that near her (at least according to the accounts I've heard from her school friends).

Plus, the horse riding dance is awesome.

I know what you mean. I'm sick of this wave of Korean pop music, full of overproduced songs by upwardly-mobile people trying to become part of the nouveau riche and live in the swanky part of town while not really understanding the social conventions of the upper class, and instead becoming gauche burlesques of that thing instead.

Now, if someone were to create a music video about that, I might watch it.

No no. They'll eat the cheapest food so they can afford to have Starbucks or something like that. Apparently Starbucks is hideously expensive in SK, so going there makes you look high-class.

They're referred to as soybean-paste girls (there's a type of fermented soybean paste that is in a LOT of korean food.. apparently it's healthy but not awesome, and super cheap.). Never having been there, I cannot say this with any authority.

Do they make music videos of The Great Gatsby?

That 'article' reads like an older parent with a stick up his ass, shaking his fist at the kids walking through his yard and yelling at clouds. Also he clearly didn't even bother to do any research on it or he'd realize it's parodying the lifestyles of the 'newly rich' (or at least that's what it said on the wikipedia article).

SineSwiper: MadSkillz: I did some research (googled) and found that the song is basically a parody anyhow, of a type of young woman in Korea who skimps on essentials so they can spend their money looking affluent.

So, a female version of Ricers?

Except ricers really don't end up looking affluent.

Nice. I'm partial to this one. They even performed it on Letterman, with a rather bemused Bill Murray and Regis Philbin looking on.

Canton: Wayne 985: Gangnam Style is the new Macarena. It was entertaining for a couple days, and now will die a much deserved death within a year.

"Macarena" was released in 1995. Here we are, almost twenty years later, still talking about it. To me, that suggests that the "Macarena" is not dead. Maybe we'll still be talking about "Gangnam Style" in a couple of decades, too.

1989-1992 I was teaching in Japan. And traveled all around Asia during breaks. Oh never mind, I was thinking of the Lambada. The Lambada was huge internationally at that time. Now I have to think of an events horizon for the Macarena era. Yeah, Macarena came later.

I ignored it until Klingon Style came out; my Trekkie instincts took over and I couldn't help but watch it. I realized that I had to see the original to fully understand the parody, so I did, and promptly kicked myself for not having watched it sooner. Upon researching PSY and the impetus for the song, I'm really happy that PSY and the song have become such a huge deal - kicking Bieber off the top of the YouTube charts is just a bonus.

Miss Korea contestants do a lip-sync version called "Miko Style" Just keep in mind for the first minute they play "Pomp and Circumstance".

I would find Korean women more attractive if every one I have ever met didn't seem to run the psychological gamut of NYC neurotic to full blown crazy. I remember what Steve McNair said.

The guy is just riding the wave of insanity and enjoying it. Sometimes music is about high craft or brilliant songwriting, but sometimes, it's just about a moment, some luck, pushing people's buttons in the right way.

There's a clip of him watching the parodies and laughing. He's performed with Britney and Madonna. He's had a #1 all over the world. He had only the 5th ever #1 foreign language single in the UK. If you'd have said to anyone that a pop star from Korea would be doing this, they'd have told you to shut up.

What's interesting is how much that whole "new media" thing caused this. This isn't about record companies, radio, shops or TV. It was all about YouTube, Twitter, Amazon and iTunes.

For everyone saying its his 15 minutes of fame and he is a one hit wonder etc. Give the guy a break. When your first song is a hit you are always a one hit wonder, and then MAYBE you have a second one, then who knows.... an album even ! My point is that the guy shouldnt be automatically written off as having peaked, he has a huge fan base that may only know one of his songs but the base itself is HUGE. If you dont hear from him again in six months or a year then you may be right but this is actually how people get started isnt it?

Dr.Zom: I think PSY is awesome and a refreshing change from the self-important dbags who infest the American pop scene.

Any idea where I can download that UV song?
