Canton: Summoner101: andrewagill: fusillade762: If you've never and want to:

I haven't and don't.

I know what you mean. I'm sick of this wave of Korean pop music, full of overproduced songs by upwardly-mobile people trying to become part of the nouveau riche and live in the swanky part of town while not really understanding the social conventions of the upper class, and instead becoming gauche burlesques of that thing instead.

Now, if someone were to create a music video about that, I might watch it.

Do they make music videos of The Great Gatsby?

Ahh, now there's an idea. "Gatsby Style." You should pitch it to... well, someone.

"Hey, sexy Daisy..."

This green makes me even more eager to boast that I've never watched anything in "gangnam style", and have no clear idea what "gangnam style" even is.

And, as I will not revisited this thread again, it does you no good to try to explain it to me, as I will never read it.

Its rare that my ignorance of something makes me feel superior to the rest of you. And yet, here we are.

I prefer Gundam Style:http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xt10rn_gundam-style-mv-psy-gang nam-style-parody_music

Sad that it got taken down from youtube though. I was following the threads for it on /m/ as the guy was making it and a few of my suggestions made it into the final.

weiner dog: I ignored it until Klingon Style came out; my Trekkie instincts took over and I couldn't help but watch it. I realized that I had to see the original to fully understand the parody, so I did, and promptly kicked myself for not having watched it sooner. Upon researching PSY and the impetus for the song, I'm really happy that PSY and the song have become such a huge deal - kicking Bieber off the top of the YouTube charts is just a bonus.

sprag: Canton: Wayne 985: Gangnam Style is the new Macarena. It was entertaining for a couple days, and now will die a much deserved death within a year.

"Macarena" was released in 1995. Here we are, almost twenty years later, still talking about it. To me, that suggests that the "Macarena" is not dead. Maybe we'll still be talking about "Gangnam Style" in a couple of decades, too.

Indeed. I went to a science-fair-thingy for 9-14 year olds (FIRST Lego League) and while the judges were deciding the results "Macarena" came on the loudspeakers and most of the kids were doing it. Its not gone by a long shot.

If they play Gangnam Style at the state championship one of my team members is going to blow a fuse...she was born in Gangnam and gets pissed when people sing that near her (at least according to the accounts I've heard from her school friends).

Plus, the horse riding dance is awesome.

I do judging for FIRST out in Davis every year.
Im expected to do that and the YMCA...those songs can't die.

With a bit of luck, your life is ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of YouTube's favorite videos, men in red Fark shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know.

It could be worse ... at least the chicken dance is confined to weddings!

Wow. I used to have that "It's popular, must avoid" attitude, too. But I grew out of it around, oh, middle school. Not that I acted like a holier-than-thou arse in elementary school...

I haven't watched it yet. I guess it's time...

Graduations, sporting events, and weddings will have it playing for years to come. You have time.

I saw the Oregon Duck parody (before it got yanked), so I have a pretty good idea.

I'm not sure why it got yanked. But it's back... now with Best Korean censorship.

The guy is just riding the wave of insanity and enjoying it. Sometimes music is about high craft or brilliant songwriting, but sometimes, it's just about a moment, some luck, pushing people's buttons in the right way.

There's a clip of him watching the parodies and laughing. He's performed with Britney and Madonna. He's had a #1 all over the world. He had only the 5th ever #1 foreign language single in the UK. If you'd have said to anyone that a pop star from Korea would be doing this, they'd have told you to shut up.

What's interesting is how much that whole "new media" thing caused this. This isn't about record companies, radio, shops or TV. It was all about YouTube, Twitter, Amazon and iTunes.

For everyone saying its his 15 minutes of fame and he is a one hit wonder etc. Give the guy a break. When your first song is a hit you are always a one hit wonder, and then MAYBE you have a second one, then who knows.... an album even ! My point is that the guy shouldnt be automatically written off as having peaked, he has a huge fan base that may only know one of his songs but the base itself is HUGE. If you dont hear from him again in six months or a year then you may be right but this is actually how people get started isnt it?

Also consider that this is not his first song or album, PSY has had a career for over a decade.

Dr.Zom: I think PSY is awesome and a refreshing change from the self-important dbags who infest the American pop scene.

Korean pop as a whole seems a lot more fun and interesting than the crap we get in the States.
I mean, this one song by Brown Eyed Girls is better than Niki Minaj's entire career.

And this song by UV is one of the funniest videos I've ever seen.

And they also seem interested in making videos like we used to in the 80s and 90s - strange weird videos. This one by Narsha plays like an old Kate Bush video. Bonus points for Freddy Krueger back up dancers.

And my current favorite.

Any idea where I can download that UV song?

Nice. I'm partial to this one. They even performed it on Letterman, with a rather bemused Bill Murray and Regis Philbin looking on.

Nevermind..found it
