I like Coldplay.

No homo.

eyehate: I like Coldplay.

So do I. Some of the best concerts I've been to have been Coldplay shows. They're not for everyone, and that's cool, but I don't get the hate, personally. I think Chris Martin's wife is a bit of an uppity coont, but that really doesn't have anything to do with him or the band.

2012-11-24 12:17:06 PM
I guess it's hip to hate Coldplay

/one thing I ain't been in decades is hip
//I kinda like what I've heard of them

2012-11-24 12:20:57 PM
I like Coldplay, myself.

*shrugs*

Again, I'd have to say that this is a case where a headline features more artless biatching and trollery than actual biting wit or snark.

I don't enjoy their music, but I don't wish them any specific harm.

Who?

2012-11-24 12:49:24 PM
Goddamn I hate it when this happens. I go into a thread expecting fiery rage and vengeance exacted upon hapless mortals, and instead we get people offering flowers and kind words.

Someone better call them crap soon.

2012-11-24 01:55:44 PM
They're great live and I don't mind at all saying I like them. Guess I'm not hip enough to hate them

Also, TFA says they're only taking a break from touring

Coldplay is pretty farking good. Of course, your average Farkers has horrible taste in music, so, yeah.

2012-11-24 02:15:21 PM
Nothing wrong with Coldplay. I'm sure they thought they were going to be the biggest band in the world for a while there, and I think the hype got the better of 'em, but they put out some quality stuff.

2012-11-24 02:15:44 PM
Coldplay is just waiting Mumford & Son's reign as the new King of similar sounding emotional British pop music.

Are we supposed to hate Coldplay now?

Aaawww. And I just started working up a frothing, pitchfork-grabbing hatred over Nickleback.

Yellow is cool song, reminds me of a time and place. I wont miss them though

BronyMedic: Are we supposed to hate Coldplay now?

It's hard to generate a real hatred for something bland. Does anyone "hate" sliced bread, vanilla ice cream, or bottled water?

I'll admit that I think some Coldplay songs (particularly on their first two studio albums) are good, but most of their stuff is so derivative and banal, I'm going to have a hard time telling some of their music apart from my A/C unit or dehumidifier running in the background.

2012-11-24 02:35:26 PM
Hate is a bit strong of a word for them. I just kind of throw them in with Mumford and sons and Gotye, bland music that's just there. It's not offensive, but it's not exactly enjoyable either. Very little power, emotion, or force to the music, and frankly when I listen to music it's got to have those.

Exactly.  How does one "hate" a band for their music?  They're stuff is bland and emotionally flat in my eyes.  So I just don't listen to them.

The only music I "hate" is techno... because I had a neighbor that would blast his own techno "creations" all friggin day long.

I didn't know the only people who listened to Coldplay were homosexuals. I guess my boyfriend will be in for a rude awakening when I tell him that because we both like Coldplay, I'm a lesbian and he's gay.

Well damn. Got any ideas on how to break the news to his family? Hanukkah is coming up, we could do it then.

No, it's the one from Ghost World: "We came by to fark you but you weren't here. Therefore, you're gay."

pretty much my thoughts, though i would add that I really hated hearing Yellow every nine or tenth song back in 2000-ish.

My massaged therapist liked to sneak Cold Play into her mix of relaxing music. Even though I complained, she kept trying to play cold play music while giving me my massage. I started using a different massage therapist.

Coldplay is background music--throw on one of their CDs with a mixed group and no one complains, but no one's listening either.

I love metal but I think we have one of the most pretentious fan bases in all of music with electronic in a close second.

Lots of bands openly admit that they dont really care or assign themselves to specific genres, but good lord stand clear if your talking to a fan and you call it just "Metal" instead of "Blackdeath metalcore"

Really great way to isolate and turn off potential fans.

Trollin4Colon: Lots of bands openly admit that they dont really care or assign themselves to specific genres, but good lord stand clear if your talking to a fan and you call it just "Metal" instead of "Blackdeath metalcore"

eh, I'm suspicious of any band that says they don't like to be labelled as, more often than not, you can more or less sum up their sound as "derivative of [band]." That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I can appreciate the honesty of a band admitting that they're not much more than the sum of their influences.

as far as specific genres go, I'm not a metal fan so I can't comment too much on that genre, but it does seem like an increasing trend in other genres I like where a lot of stuff labeled as being part of the genre clearly doesn't belong*. That's not a strike against the bands being incorrectly co-opted, but it does make it more difficult to seek out recommendations when it feels like you're talking to someone who clearly has no idea what they're talking about.

* I have no idea where the hell this came from, but a lot of Shoegaze fans have the idea that the band True Widow is somehow Shoegaze despite sounding nothing like anyone else in the genre. Hell, /mu/ seems to think Codeine(!) is Shoegaze and True Widow is much closer to Codeine than My Bloody Valentine, et al. , so I'm completely farking confused.

You're missing out my friend. "Glory Box" is aural sex. Listen to it where you can get some respectable bass.

Paradise is an awesome song.

A bunch of their other stiff is great too

Coldplay isn't bad. Like Nickelback, it's benign, although it's far more listenable. If I am in the mood for music like that Coldplay, I'll just pop in some U2.

My mom will be disappointed by this announcement, though. She's definitely a fan.

chewy milk: Paradise is an awesome song.

Paradise is phenomenal, yes. So is Up In Flames, off the same album. If I had to make a list of my Top 10 Coldplay tracks, it would look like this:

1. In My Place
2. Violet Hill
3. Paradise
4. Up In Flames
5. The Scientist
6. Clocks
7. Fix You
8. Speed of Sound
9. Yes
10. Hurts Like Heaven

Like I said before, they're not for everyone, but on the grand scale of musicians, they're not down on the shiatty end with Justin Bieber and Britney Spears.

2012-11-24 10:15:31 PM
Like a couple of Coldplay songs (Violet Hill, Paradise, and to a lesser extent Cemeteries of London come to mind) though their ballads just sound really dreary. Can't drum up any real frothing hatred towards them any more than other run-of-the-mill top 40 radio band.

I can. For Talk. Direct lift of Kraftwerk's Computer Love. Don't care if they got permission or not - come up with your own f'ing songs you talentless hacks. That act alone has turned me off of Coldplay - permanently. It's just as reprehensible as Kenny G. defecating over old Louis Armstrong recordings with his meandering noodling.

2012-11-24 11:12:14 PM
It'll give them some time to come up with a new song to add to the three they've already released.

2012-11-25 12:10:20 AM
Not a fan of Coldplay but I wouldn't wish them death or anything. I just find their music really... vanilla and bland. Sort of the Mantovanni of British pop.

2012-11-25 12:28:08 AM
A lead singer who can't sing can be forgiven if he's playing incredibly complex riffs and solos like say, Dave Mustaine. I see no excuse for Chris Martin, or the spectacularly unimpressive band members.

2012-11-25 12:28:46 AM
please tell them to take maroon5, justin biever, keisha, and damn near every other top 100 pop crap band thats been on the scene for the last 40-50 years while they're going. and don't come back.

2012-11-25 02:20:51 AM

I like Coldplay songs, but when I put in a CD I'm usually done with it halfway through. Took a couple on a trip to Vegas a few years back. Was really glad I took 28 other CDs to listen to before I even got to San Bernadino (I'm in San Diego).

2012-11-26 06:58:51 AM
I'm terribly disappointed in you people. Coldplay genuinely sucks, and three years is not long enough.
Granted, there are worse things out there, but they are quite awful.
