I think conclusion is absolutely wrong. "43-component mixture smells to other 43-component mixtures." and "our brains treat smells as a single unit" don't mix lol.

In other words, it took 43 components make them similar. Assuming that 43 was not some random number but minimum result of some experiments, humans probably have about 43 spectrum of smell perceptions. Kind of like sound spectrum analyzer will 43 frequency bars. I suspect that sound perception work about the same and somewhere between 5-50 mixture of frequency make noise sound the same.

Also, it seems to me GREY is better word to describe all medium intensity back ground level.

With such strong evidence as "I think", "assuming", "probably", "kind of like", "I suspect" and "It seems to me" I can't imagine why they didn't get your expert consult to begin with.

When I first moved into my house, I dropped some Comet I was cleaning with down in my gas heater. Four years later, the heater still has that faint Comet smell every time it turns on. That's what it smells like. Kind of like chalk.

My company recently finished an office expansion, so I got a new office with a nice view of the pond. Well, they pump white noise into the new office area. I didn't even notice it until someone brought it to my attention. Now I CAN'T STOP HEARING IT!

Professional smellers use coffee to 'reset' their olfactory apparatuses before test-smelling something.
Does such a thing exist in the auditory world (a 'reset' sound')?

To me, ozone smells like what I'd imagine "white noise" to smell like.

Could be because there's usually sparks involved.

The smell of ozone is much too sharp unless it is very dilute. Using an ozone generator in the lab let's you know immediately if the hood is down.

As someone with synesthesia, I can tell you exactly what it smells like, and that is ground white pepper.

It's fun, but after awhile, you kinda don't want to taste the interference pattern in curtains, or hear the screeching of high-intensity headlights.

So, "white noise smell" is what happens when you go perfume shopping, and you reach the point where you can no longer detect new smells?

Yes, it's called "silence". Although often just listening to something that is sonically very different to the "test subject" is enough to give you back some perspective, and can even be faster than taking a silence break.

I used to not mind 128k mp3s a bit and didn't notice anything wrong with them.

Then one day, as I was listening to the finale of Beethoven's 9th, I realized just how badly it was breaking up into static/hash because there wasn't enough bandwidth to encode all the sounds going on at once. My brain's been doing nothing but get more adept at spotting audio compression artifacts since. Damn you, brain!

The last time I went in for jury duty, the judge had a button on the bench to activate a white noise generator whenever the attorneys requested a bench conference. It was surprisingly effective at masking their speech.
