This is Canada's Benghazi. I have a theory that bacon is somehow involved. Probably to cover up the hamburger. Buns may even be involved, nice buns. I hear that somebody might be getting the pickle on the side. Something doesn't look right here. There needs to be an investigation. Who knew what and when? What should I have for breakfast? I'm just asking questions here. Is a bacon burger a "legitimate" breakfast?

They were going to fire the inspectors before the recall was a twinkle in the Industry Minister's eye. It was a dumb idea then, and it just makes the Harper Government^tm look even less competent. Mind you, they're also firing statisticians, scientists, and so on. It's going to be years before Canada recovers from their short-sighted policies.

Anyhow, on with distracting people from real problems by discussing Prime Minister Sweater-vest's helmet hair.

Yet you still have to fire all of your statisticians and meat inspectors because the NDerP insists that lazy Canadians should not have to deal with the consequences of their bad decisions. Nice ad hominem that in no way refutes my argument.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: Sounds like Harper is Canada's GWB... Is that a fair statement?

Pretty close, including hundreds of billions in mortgage guarantees pouring like a fire house from the federal government until very recently. GWB may have been brighter than Canda's three stooges - Harper, Flaherty and Carney, the latter another Goldman Sachs alumnus - in that the US housing boom/bust cycle was a secondary result of blind faith in deregulation. For Canada's "fiscally responsible Conservatives" funneling money into the mortgage chute was central policy and the secret sauce behind our "banking miracle".

With as much as the present Canadian Conservatives are trying to emulate the GOP, I wonder how long it will be before Harper tries to dismantle Medicare and make the Canadian healthcare system look like the US? Although I doubt even HE is that pants on fire on head retarded to do something that harebrained (since I'm sure the people of Canada would come after him and the Conservatives with torches and pitchforks if he tried).

lj1330: Question: Why are we importing beef from Canada? Don't we have enough of our own?

IANAR(ancher) but my guess is that it has something to do with the US using one third of its corn crop to make ethanol, mandated for use by the EPA. Corn is a major component of cattle feed (all that sugar fattens 'em up faster than a teenager on Big Gulps...well, equally fast, anyway). Raise the price/decrease the supply of corn, you change the economics of raising beef.

For cheaper beef, anyway. The more expensive range-fed stuff, not so much.

That's my guess, but I never did finish that GED in agribusiness, so YMMV

I don't think I've ever seen so much fail in one post before.

1) "nice ad Hominem", how is me talking about the Canadian economy an ad Hominem attack?
2) I'm a Liberal. As in a member of the Liberal Party. I've never voted NDP
3) I've never call Americans or Republicans racist
4) Canada is 80% white (same as US)
5) The Canadian Conservative party is the one laying off Statisticians and inspectors, engineers, scientists, researchers etc...etc...

I'm really not sure what you are on about but Canada and I think all-in-all Canada is doing a pretty good job despite the regressive policies of our current Conservative Government. We have a healthy democracy and will give helmet hair his pink slip when we are tired of him.

It's already in the works. The Canada Health Accord expires in 2014, and a year ago the federal government unilaterally handed down a new cost-share formula that puts caps on the feds' share of costs after that. That means that the provinces will have to pay a larger share of the healthcare costs for an aging population, whether that means an increase in taxes, privatization or decreased service/quality. In the end, because it's a complicated issue years in the making, Harper's betting that the people will blame the provincial premiers when things go sideways, and unfortunately I think there's a good chance he's right.

The problem is that the border inspectors were intended to be redundant, but now they're increasingly necessary because Canada doesn't have enough inspectors. I have a cousin who's an inspector in Alberta and he said that they're stretched so thin that they're to the point that they don't really inspect facilities/products much anymore, they just review the on-site corporate inspectors' paperwork. And he's delaying retirement because he knows he won't be replaced.

But wouldn't that just encourage people to shift it back to the canadian federal government?

Administration of the health system is at the provincial level, so long as the provinces comply with federal standards (so that all Canadians theoretically have equal access etc). I could easily envision the federal government down the road putting a stop to trying to shift the blame back to where it belongs by saying "You want us to pay a bigger share? Fine, we're taking over running things too", which wouldn't go over well at all.
