Generation_D: I thought it was the day after thanksgiving when we let the servants, who were mostly "black" (from all that hard work on thanksgiving you see) go shopping.

Similarly, Boxing Day was when we let the slaves fight over the holiday leftovers. Of course in the 20th century we gave them gloves, so as to make the tradition more humane.

Except isn't boxing day not an American tradition? First I heard of it was from Canadian relatives. So the slavery connection doesn't make any sense. I haven't bothered looking at the internet for its origins so I'm just going off of my personal experience.

you kids deserve to know the truth. Canada = liars. not only were they all about slavery, they also made black gentlemen beat hell out of each other for their own entertainment. sick bastards, every one of them.

It's a metaphorical darkness, a bleakness of spirit, a prevailing sense of doom.

So, in a Republican sort of way, maybe.

Black Friday "was not a happy term," department store historian Michael J. Lisicky told CBS News last year.

OK. Didn't know there was a need for someone to be an official department store historian, but I guess there is a niche for almost anything.
