dahmers love zombie: cretinbob: know...for what it is....because of course it's not a "nice" movie.
//I thought Watership Down at first.

Yep. I misread and thought it said "most depressing ANIMAL movie".

For me, it would be The Plague Dogs, though I know some people think Watership Down has it beaten by a hare.

Saddest candy EVAR?

Just how dead inside do you have to be to see the candy tin in that movie and think "now there's a great idea for a product tie-in!"

CptnSpldng: Oh, now that's just WRONG.

Yeah, they would only have gotten one or two meals out of Seymour, then back to starving.

Rwa2play: I'll say that it would be a hell of a contest: Which is the more depressing move, "Grave of the Firefiles" or "Threads"?

Isn't that what happeend at Jonestown?

I saw the headline and immediately snarked to myself, "Subby's an idiot, the most depressing animated movie evar is Grave of the Fireflies and they've already made a live-action version, so the headline is obviously incorrect."

Fine, subby, you made me look like an ass to myself, are you happy now?

I mean.. japanese anime has an entire genre for depressing shows with horrific endings..

My Girlfriend the Ultimate Weapon, Elfen Lied, Naruto Filler... I mean...I'd hate to see any of those made into live action movies.

WhippingBoy: I watched Grave of the Fireflies after hearing a lot about it.
While it was sad, it was by no means as bad as people made it out to be.
I guess I have no soul.

That's okay. Many people without souls live happy, productive lives.

Then it's lights out.

many years back, whilst on temdu deployment, attached to a patrol boat, we found the animated grave of the fireflies in the ship's tape library. i knew what it was, but everyone else was in the dark and in the mood for something light, so it went in.

i got to watch an entire team of navy SEALs turn into blubbery booger-crying wrecks by the end of that movie. some of the baddest, most hardcore mother-effers on the planet cried their eyes out after watching that film.

it's that gut-wrenching.

I have has the displeasure of watching Grave of the Fireflies about 5 times I think. When people who can appreciate it came over I'd show it to them. It is soul crushing, especially if you've personally been responsible for a little girl before (like me with my nieces). It always makes me cry like a little biatch as well as anyone who's watching it.

Anyway, one of my wife's 8th grade students was an anime fan and she got to talking to me about it one day when I went to help my wife at work. I brought up the movie and she asked to borrow it. Being a prick I agreed with the express intention of farking her head up. When her mom came to pick her up I told her that she could watch it, but only if mom agreed. Mom grabbed the DVD and saw its rating and content and agreed even after I warned them.

She missed school the next day. My wife was so pissed at me. The mother sat the family down to watch it. Mom, dad, 14 year old, 10 year old, and 8 year old. By the end they were distraught and in tears. The oldest (the student) and the 10 year old had to take antidepressants and go to therapy. Mom and dad blamed me for it of course. Stupid California.

Good. It's being done in the UK. I shudder what an American studio would do to it.
