Interesting how Roger Ebert predicted that. His argument that watching a live action version you are watching children act like they are starving and dieing. But in the animated version, it is the IDEA of a child starving to death. He also feels that animated is more real than a live action movie, in that what is happening to the character on screen is really the character actually going through the story and not some actor pretending to be punched, for example.

Interesting stuff.

I was thinking it would be kinda difficult to do a live action Watership down, and Old Yeller was live action already.

a co-worker gave me a copy of Graveyard for Fireflies, difficult to fathom a movie being more tear evoking than The Road.
I pre-viewed it and decided it was not for the young folk to watch on Turkey day. instead we watched Avengers.

And they used to show it back to back in Japan with "My Neighbor Totoro." One of the comments on it was, "People didn't want to stay for 'Grave of the Fireflies' after starting with 'My Neighbor Totoro.'"

I saw the 2005 live-action version of the film. I liked it. Thought the little girl that played Setsuko was good.
I'm curious to see a different take on the story. Though nothing can beat the animation.
Someday I'd like to read the novel too.

I bought Requiem several years ago when I joined a dvd club, as I had seen it once and thought it a powerful movie. I have never played the dvd. I rented Fireflies, also years ago, don't know whether I can ever watch it again.

Reminiscent of my first experience with blotter. Double bill at the Waverly Theater back in 1973. "Easy Rider" and "Yellow Submarine" (in that order) with the only hairy moment being the preview of the special midnight showing of "Night of the Living Dead."

I have has the displeasure of watching Grave of the Fireflies about 5 times I think. When people who can appreciate it came over I'd show it to them. It is soul crushing, especially if you've personally been responsible for a little girl before (like me with my nieces). It always makes me cry like a little biatch as well as anyone who's watching it.

Anyway, one of my wife's 8th grade students was an anime fan and she got to talking to me about it one day when I went to help my wife at work. I brought up the movie and she asked to borrow it. Being a prick I agreed with the express intention of farking her head up. When her mom came to pick her up I told her that she could watch it, but only if mom agreed. Mom grabbed the DVD and saw its rating and content and agreed even after I warned them.

She missed school the next day. My wife was so pissed at me. The mother sat the family down to watch it. Mom, dad, 14 year old, 10 year old, and 8 year old. By the end they were distraught and in tears. The oldest (the student) and the 10 year old had to take antidepressants and go to therapy. Mom and dad blamed me for it of course. Stupid California.

Am I the only one who thought of Up?
