I love bizarre and obscure Christmas music. Just about every single artist out there has released Christmas music over every single musical genre out there. Traditional, lounge, country, rap, metal, techno/electronika, Ska, punk, Hawaiian, African. You name it, and I can probably drag out an example of the musical Genre being used to make Christmas music.

I pride myself on my expansive, and ever expanding collection of Christmas music, and this time of year is great because I can listen to it with impunity....

With that said... even I find the crap they pump into the stores to be trifling and insipid.

lets make this an awesome Christmas song thread!

Christmas music is okay, but Christmas music on the radio before it's even December, really drives me nuts. I am so sick of hearing it by mid-December that I leave my radio off for the last two weeks of the month.

I'm a sucker for Carol of the Bells, so far this is my favorite. Wish I could find it for purchase somewhere so it doesn't crap out on the highs with the volume up, but I'll admit I haven't looked very hard.

Here's another good version. I have to find a new link to it every year because somebody runs around sending take-down notices on it. The grinches!

Isn't there an xkcd comic on this topic? Something along the lines of making the point that all popular Christmas music is from the 50s in order to make the baby boomers remember their childhood or something. Seems legit, though as each year passes I'm wonderin how much longer baby boomer culture will dominate America, suppose it will be until WWIII or something equally dramatic to cause a culture shift.

borg: Attention Christmas 24/7 radio stations "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is not a Christmas song.

no... it's more of a Date rape song, but more particularly, its a WINTER song, so it counts.. Remember, Sleigh ride and jingle bells, don't necessarily mention Christmas, but they are adopted as Christmas songs because they take place in winter.

you can dismiss this notion all you want, but you must admit, it would be odd to hear the song in the middle of june.

"Chiron Beta Prime" is the only holiday song I can listen to year 'round. For most other tunes, I start to feel a mite stabby if I hear them before December.

Which made costume-shopping a slightly frustrating experience, as some of the stores where I sought accessories started playing sappy poppy Christmas stuff mid-October.

Super happy with the new music being suggested here. I'd never heard White Wine in the Sun before, and it's brilliant.

My faves are:

The Calling - Carol of the Bells.

Jingle Jane - Divide and Kreate
Christmas in Boston - Go Home Productions

The website for those two ^ is horrid, but the songs are good if you like mashups.

They have been playing Christmas music on the PA system at my grocery store since before Halloween.

Christmas decorations went up Oct 15 more or less. After 90+ days of this crap, I get totally sick of it.

The problem with Christmas songs is, they never die; they just get recycled over and over again.

Oh dear me. Cpl D, I really wish I was a high level telepath.

I'd have put "Storm" on the floor with a 10 megaton nuke going off in her lower jaw and then told her
"No penicillin or Vicodin for you!!"

Mannheim Steamroller was founded by the guy who wrote "Convoy" and other novelty songs of the 70's.

Each summer day is Christmas for me. One of our two neighborhood ice cream trucks plays Christmas music w/ a hip hop beat. A definite improvement over Turkey in the Straw. The guys look Middle Eastern; so my sister opined that they might not know it is holiday music; I'm pretty sure they do. The weird part is, it's funny every damned time.

To hate music is peculiarly a religionistic past-time from mid-Century haters; care to comment?

Here's another one of his, Kittypie. He mocks the music industry because he was told the only way he was gonna sell music was by being angsty and brooding and "deep".

Enjoys it.

/his solo at the 4 or 4:30 mark is amazing

Oy, It's killing me that I can't find a thing anywhere to link to for The Klezmonauts' version of Little Drummer Boy.

It's so wrong that it is right. The only video I could find was some guy's terrible video of xmas lights set to it...complete with an airplane going by at super loud volume. It is on myspace music. Myspace has a music? There's a myspace? That's a thing?

Anyways, if klezmer xmas music doesn't do it for you, at least go to the drummer boy's 'solo' at 1:29.

BEST Christmas album...evar.

Kittypie070: Oh, and the Little Drummer Boy....well let's just put it this way.

Wow. That's a very appropos photo.
That kitty looks very upset.

That's how I feel about all earworms, much less shiatty Christmas ones.

/I will wrap a mouse for you and put it under your tree, because I think I hear that song a billion times every season. Sorry, Kittypie.

borg: Attention Christmas 24/7 radio stations "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is not a Christmas song.

It's a song about farking. What's not to like? That says Happy Holidays to me.
Every song isn't about Christmas.

What_Would_Jimi_Do: i just made a trip to the grocery store. when i was checking out, i was talking with the manager. i told him i know why so many people commit suicide during christmas, it's because people start playing christmas music the day after thanksgiving.

I don't think Jimi would have laid a trip like that on someone who didn't deserve it- so that's what Jimi would do.

Cerebral Knievel: I love bizarre and obscure Christmas music. Just about every single artist out there has released Christmas music over every single musical genre out there. Traditional, lounge, country, rap, metal, techno/electronika, Ska, punk, Hawaiian, African. You name it, and I can probably drag out an example of the musical Genre being used to make Christmas music

You can add Steampunk to that list

Cpl.D: You're wrong, but only because you didn't watch this.

Ok,what was so tear-jerking about that song? It's nice, and has a great meaning, and certainly better than most of the modern Christmas pop jingle suck. But at the 3:00 mark I started thinking "drinking white wine in the sun" meant that all those people listed are already dead, and he was looking forward to joining them in the afterlife. If we're going for that sentiment, I suggest Dead, Dead, Dead.

/great song otherwise, thanks for sharing it

She also suspects that for anyone of a different faith who doesn't celebrate Christmas,"holiday music must be beyond annoying, right into offensive."

Got that far - had to stop. Had the immediate feeling of "Oh lord, here we go... preaching ahead."

Cyno01: My dads been playing this on the Christmas edition of his radio show the past couple years.

That was cool, thanks for sharing that.

I'm a member of a halau (hula school) and we've been seriously rehearsing xmas hulas for the last 3 weeks for our xmas fundraising show and I haven't yet become crazed by the Hawaiian xmas music.
