Russians hate them and generally think they got of easy for what they did to the church.

Western media is lying, or ignorant, when they claim that this has anything to do with a protest against Putin. They got jailed for acting like asses inside a church, something you shouldn't do in Russia.

We have to assume they picked a church, precisely because they figured that would get them the attention they so thought (after being ignored on all the other occasion.
