Yeah, that was probably of the coolest eps. in his run. The ghosts of his recent past get shed for that one moment and you cheer for him, loudly.

I hate 60's and 70's cheesy camp Sci-fi. It just deserves parody. Good stories, still, but the production and execution were really ugh.

Smith's Doctor just has no character. He's milk powder on white canvas hung from a white wall in a museum carved from limestone. Utterly forgettable, even while actively watching the show. There's no "there" there.

Smith sorta comes off like he's trying to copy Tennant but throwing in a pinch of prudish grandma judgement. STILL easier to watch then Eccleston.

She didn't take any crap and held her own.
She wasn't a "yes man" so to speak.

I'll grant this for Tennant: he brought consistency to inconsistent script-writing. Of course, it was consistently hammy, but it was consistent. Tennant's rage-face was also consistently funny, which probably wasn't appropriate, but there it was.

While overall, I prefer the Smith era, I will grant that the script quality has mostly declined. Smith has yet to get a "Blink" or "Girl in the Fireplace", which goes to show: RTD was a terrible writer, but a great producer. Moffat was a great writer, not so great when he's also producing.

As I've said before, Smith hasn't really been given much to work with, since he's been starring in The Amy Pond Show for the last two seasons, and all his character has been tasked to do is FIND AMY HELP AMY LOVE AMY MISS AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY. Now that his stretch on that show is over with, and he's back to starring on Doctor Who, maybe we'll see what his Doctor can really be like.

That was not my impression of the charactor, but I respect the PoV.

Her story arc was the most tragic, actually. When she was introduced-she was a selfish, ignorant, boisterous woman. By the end of her arc, she had become selfless, learned and softened a bit. She also had the joy of becoming as smart as the Doctor...and felt like she could be his pal and be a true partner in their endeavors....

When the doctor had to remove all memory of their trips to save her life, she was begging him not to take everything she gained away. Doctor Donna would have honestly died at the top, than reduced back being that small, ignorant woman again.

McCoy's run was one third great, one third passable, and one third crap.

In fact, you can split it easily among seasons. Season 24 was crap. Between still having Mel around, and stories that might have been fun (Delta and the Bannermen) having a whole episode's worth of material cut from them until they made almost no sense, season 24 sucked. Dragonfire was better than the average story that season, though. And it got rid of Mel!

Season 25 was the passable season. Ace was being developed, the stories were better than the previous season, but the show still had a ways to go.

Season 26 was damn good. They finally seemed like they had something to write about, McCoy was firing on all cylinders as The Doctor, they introduced, or at least played up, the manipulative angry old man aspect of the character that would work so well for post-reboot Doctors, and Ace became the first modern companion by not only doing something more than screaming, but by being given something to do in the shows and being given a backstory and characterization.

Why the hell are you getting Rose mixed up with Amy.?

Tennant was nothing but Rose this, and Rose that!

In fact Davies admitted that his Doctor was all about relationships: Rose was the love who healed the Doctor but ended up with a "better" version of him. Martha was the love who should have been treated better. Donna was all about the friendship.

Amy actually is a lot like Donna-she was always was a great friend. Rory, Amy and Matt Smith Doctor was always the Three Amigos. The whole point of "Amy's Choice" was to make the viewers know that Amy and Rory were in love with each other...and was't going to be like the Rose/Martha and who ever else was co-staring with Tennant at the time....

It's not like the old days- Doctor Who has story arcs and actual character growth. One thing I will hand to Davies, was that his stories could stand alone, and generally did lead up to a big End Of Season story...Which he really screwed up 99% of the time with "God In The Machine" style scripting.

Moffat really had paid attention to the time aspect and story arcs. In the first two seasons, you missed an episode-you missed an important story element. This season, Moffat is going through more single story episodes. But knowing him, he's laying down groundwork for the 50th anniversary next year.

Yeah, odds are, you saw the Christmas episode between season 2 and 3 where Donna was the "runaway bride" who appeared in the TARDIS. And she was a total harpie shrew biatch.

Of course, her one outing with the Doctor changed her, so that by the time we met up with her again in S4, she was a bit more humble, and wanting to get back what she had in her one TARDIS trip.

...and then the rest of the character growth in season 4 followed.

I mean, I've seen the series get better with each season since the reboot, but the last two or three I've absolutely loved. Probably the best part for me is how you can watch each episode as a pretty much stand alone episode(with a couple of "wonder what that was about moments), or as part of the series as a whole. but whatever way you watch it, it's still a blast.

oh my god. after rereading that, I completely sound like a basement dweller.

My 14 year old son has discovered Dr. Who via net flix. He loooooooves it. I have yet to ever see an episode.

This is the second time I've seen Varos mentioned on Fark. So I managed to, erm, find a copy. Really terrific, and the effects aren't even that horrendously cheesy either.

The sad part is, that was the episode that pretty much killed Colin Baker's run as the Doctor.

The complaints about the violence in the episode gave Dickhead BBC Controller the ammo to cancel the full length original season 23, put the show he already hated "on hiatus" for 18 months, cut the episode order when it did return, and eventually fire Colin Baker.
