I liked most of the actors, ranking Tom Baker as the best and Jon Pertwee as the least (to be fair, he had the lamest scripts).

Lame script wise goes to Colin Baker...who was the least loved of the Doctors.

Pertwee made the Doctor a man of action, instead of just the brains.

And he did it all while looking like your grandmother.

/Colin Baker had the potential to be a great Doctor. Vengeance on Varos was a sampling of what his Doctor could do with a decent script. But too many things combined to make his run not that great.

I really don't blame Colin Baker too much. He had a producer who really didn't want to do the show, but no one wanted to replace him. C.Baker really tried to be different-but he does bear the responsibility of making the doctor too unlikeable.

But the main thing was the head of the BBC was a big throbbing wanker.

C. Baker's idea was to start his Doctor off as a huge asshole, affected by the poisonous regeneration, and to eventually soften over time until he was more likeable.

Of course, he never had the chance.

Also, Baker 2 wanted to be the first Doctor in a black leather jacket, pre-dating Eccleston by 20 years but, well, Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Tennant blows them all away, but that's because he was the best actor and also given the most to work with. I hate 60's and 70's cheesy camp Sci-fi. It just deserves parody. Good stories, still, but the production and execution were really ugh.

Tennant gets knocked below Eccleston and on-par with Smith for the horrible whiny emo finale.

...and Smith still has time to do better.

Pierce Brosnan was a great Bond, he was handed scripts of successively lower quality, but he never phoned it in. While the plots were sometimes lackluster, his Bond was always Bond.

Yeah, pretty much. Colin's idea had merit, sadly there was nothing he could do about everything around him at the time.

C Baker has some great moments in Trial of a Timelord but it's just such a letdown when it gets to the end. A total cop-out ending and some of the more annoying companions. (except for Sabalom Glitz). And his coat makes it so hard to take him seriously. It's a beautiful beautiful pattern from a costumer's standpoint if you can get past the f'd up fabric.

Smith, IMHO, is far better in Tennant in one big way: he plays the doctor as an old man child alien. He dosent look at a young 19 year old girl and think..I gotta get me a piece of that. Tennant was stuck on romance far too much.

Colin Bakers approach was a lot like Hatnels original run...in the first story, the doctor was a arrogant, mean bastard... willing to murder in cold blood.

I know a lot of people have trouble with the earlier "campy" version of the Doctor Who- but at the time, BBC really didn't have a lot of money nor the reasources to pull off Hollywood style show.

Tom Baker mentioned in the Keys of Time DVD- Star Wars really upped the SFX expectations of the audience...and later shows like Star Trek TNG really made Doctor Who look like crap.

Part of the camp aspect lies in the person playing the doctor-Smith/T. Baker/McCoy/Troughton and the writers...Douglas Adams who were writing Satire.

The 1980s Twilight Zone was quite good, in part due to Harlan Ellison being one of the script editors. Of course, the producers then screwed him over on the screenplay he did about an evil Santa Clause.

FTFY

Smith's Doctor just has no character. He's milk powder on white canvas hung from a white wall in a museum carved from limestone. Utterly forgettable, even while actively watching the show. There's no "there" there.
